Which do you prefer? 4 divisions of 8? 8 divisions of 4? If they went with 8 divisions it could be done like this:

North (4)--CGY, EDM, VAN, WPG

Pacific (4)--ANA, LA, SEA, SJ

Midwest (4)--ARZ, COL, DAL, VGS

Central (4)--CHI, DET, MIN, STL

Southeast (4)--CAR, FLA, NSH, TB

Northeast (4)--BUF, MTL, OTT, TOR

Metro (4)--CMB, PHI, PIT, WAS

Atlantic (4)--BOS, NJ, NYI, NYR

I think I'd prefer 4 divisions of 8, but it is not that big a deal for me.
I do like your realignment idea.

It should still be a league of 31 teams.

/Edmonton should be relegated.

Well, here's how I do it in one of my fantasy football leagues...
  • 12-team "Spaceballs" league
  • 3 divisions
    • "Flamethrower"
    • "Lunchbox"
    • "Toilet Paper"
  • Teams that finish top 4 get placed in the "Flamethrower" division the following year; bottom 4 go in "Toilet Paper".

Pacific (8)--ANA, CGY, EDM, LA, SEA, SJ, VAN, VGS

Central (8)--ARZ, CMB, COL, DAL, MIN, NSH, STL, WPG

Original (8)--BOS, CHI, DET, MTL, NJ, NYI, NYR, TOR

Atlantic (8)--BUF, CAR, FLA, OTT, PHI, PIT, TB, WAS

I put the 'Original 6' in the same division (plus the Devils and Islanders to make 8).

8 4 team divisions as they have in the NHL is what I'd like to see. For the playoffs have your division winners and the next top 4 teams in each conference make the playoffs.

Only 4 divisions are needed. They may be called: Norris, Patrick, Smythe and Adams. Anything less is something lesser. I would propose:

WALES:
Norris- CAL, CHI, COL, DAL, MIN, NSH, STL, WPG
Smythe- ANA, ARI, EDM, LAK, SEA, SJ, VAN, VGK

CAMPBELL:
Adams- BOS, BUF, CAR, DET, FLA, MTL, OTT, TOR
Patrick- CBJ, NJ, NYI, NYR, PHI, PIT, TB, WAS

Mostly geographical, but also honors the past, rivalries and possible future expansion/relocation. (Either CAR or FLA could go to Quebec City without upsetting the divisions.). Playoffs would revert to the two division winners in each conference as 1 and 2 seeds, followed by the next 6 best teams in the conference. This is the older, better, more common sense approach, as opposed to the idiocy we have today.

Totally agree on the playoff format. What is wrong with the 1-8 format? Why punish the good teams?

(1)TB (128) vs (8)CMB (98)
(2)BOS (107) vs (7)CAR (99)
(3)WAS (104) vs (6)PIT (100)
(4)NYI (103) vs (5)TOR (100)
----------------
(1)CGY (107) vs (8)COL (90)
(2)SJ (101) vs (7)DAL (93)
(3)NSH (100) vs (6)VGS (93)
(4)WPG (99) vs (5)STL (99)

It was a double whammy. First, some good teams are going to get punished, AND the divisions in the Western Conference are unbalanced, leading to a higher percentage chance that they make the playoffs and win the Stanley Cup. Even allowing for the ongoing suckfest that is the Coyotes, it's unfair.

Hear me out, does anyone else think the first round of the playoffs should be a round robin tournament to see who advances? Serious responses only.

No, just the 16 teams that make the postseason. I'm divided if I think the round robin first round should be conference specific, or both conferences combined. If it was conference specific each team could play the other 7, so schedule wise it wouldn't be much different.
