Mariners signed LHP Wade LeBlanc to a one-year contract extension with $5 million club/vesting options for 2020, 2021, and 2022.

The new deal will pay LeBlanc a $2.75 million base salary in 2019, with performance-based bonuses that could push it to $4.75 million. The deal can max out at $32 million if all of the options and bonuses are triggered and/or exercised. LeBlanc has found new life this season in Seattle, delivering a 3-0 record, 3.38 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, and 56/15 K/BB ratio across 11 starts and five relief appearances covering 72 innings. He turns 34 years old in August.

That's a win/win type contract. Incentives for him to do well and cut bait if he drops off the map.

Exactly what I told my wife. I hope he earns the entire contract.

So do I! That would make him a very good 4 or 5 that not many teams have on the rotation.

And Moyer was 33 when he went on his career run so that would be nice.

But didn't all they really do is just guarantee this year's contract? I mean it's nice saying he could be signed through 2022 but to me it just reads he has a guaranteed contract for this year now then the club can cut bait since they have the options, not him?

If I read it right, 2019 is guaranteed for $2.75 with everything else up in the air pending performance and Mariners option to pick up from 2020-2022.

Can't help but root for the guy when he says.

"It's huge," LeBlanc said. "It's life-changing money, obviously, but for me, I've never been the kind of guy to know where my family and I are going to be the next year this early."

Good for LeBlanc, He's been around the league 10 years and probably never seen that type of money/incentives before. I'm hoping he continue to do well here in Seattle.

Well deserved. Good for him.

He also backed it up with another dominating performance over the Angels.

It was estimated that his career earnings prior to this was a little under 4 million so lets be frank and know that he was already set for life.

but at the same time to be in a situation where you are loved and people talk about you and cheer for you and you are not just some guy getting bounced around and will be gone at the end of the season is a wonderful change of story

My thoughts too. Always cool to see a guy who has bounced around a lot get a financial commitment. Guy has done everything asked and then some

The best part about this is JeDi saw his value after already shipping him out once, and made a commitment beyond this year when so much focus is on this team for the now. No doubt JeDi has made some dumb moves, but to see him already thinking about next year shows how much he wants to win. They need to extend him next, I could use a couple of more years like this one.

So it's just essentially he is just guaranteed a spring invite? I mean good for him and the Mariners are doing him a solid.

One thing this also helps with the deadline because Miranda, Whalen and Povse can all be available and those are the kind of guys they should be looking to deal for the type of pitcher they are linked to.

Not even close. If he has made just under $4M that means he has netted about ($4M - 40% Tax = $2.4M - 3% Agent Fee = $2.28M) That for next 40 years would be about $55K per year. Nice, but not set for life by any means.

Also if things go south for the Mariners at any point the next few years and hes still pitching ok they can deal him. Just having control over him would enhance his value.

I'm not saying he will be poor even w/o it, but people tend to forget that these marginal career guys still have work after baseball...like the rest of us...lol.
