Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports reports the Royals have reached a one-year, $6.5 million deal with 3B Mike Moustakas.

The deal is still pending a physical. Moustakas will earn a $5.5 million base salary with another $2.2 million available in performance bonuses. The contract also includes a mutual second-year option for $15 million or a $1 million buyout. If the option gets picked up, it would bring the deal's total value to $22.7 million. Moustakas probably regrets turning down Kansas City's qualifying offer, which would have paid him $17.4 million for 2018. It's been an eventful winter for the Royals, who lost Eric Hosmer and Lorenzo Cain in free agency but were able to retain Moustakas and Alcides Escobar while also adding Lucas Duda and Jon Jay. The former second overall pick led the Royals with a career-best 38 homers last season.:suds:

that REALLY sucks for Moose... Not just is he not being paid what he should be(by last seasons stats), but he is being well underpaid by one of the WORST teams in baseball...

If you are going to be underpaid, at least be underpaid by a team that has a chance to do something!!!

This seems like a lose-lose. Royals don't get to tank and Moose is on a team that probably won't make it to .500 next year.

My wife is really happy, though. Moose is popular in KC

Eh, the Royals can just offer the QO again or trade him when he has another season to show he is a legitimate bat. Having him sign somewhere else for less than 50M is losex2/lose

I think he could get some attention at the trading deadline. This could still work out.

The FA market right now is a bit paralyzed so there are worse things for both parties.

Looks like the Royals are using Elmer's to glue a trade piece to the board. Somebody in the hunt in middle-July will be glad to snatch this contract. At this moment, I think 24 teams are confident they can contend this year.

Figured he'd end up back there, he's still a solid player so good to see him signed.

The rebuild is mostly about this year's draft anyway.

They have some good young players in the lower levels.

Plus they are trying to negotiate their new TV deal, so they need people to watch this year

If the Royals offer him a QO, he takes it.

And that's totally fine if he produces how I expect him to.

This is a good read on mlb free agency:

MLB free agency is under attack, and Jake Arrieta deal shows how players are losing

I am telling you now that without question or doubt, next year’s market, for any number of reasons, will be worse.”

This agent swears he isn’t Chicken Little, that this winter went according to such an obvious script that the players almost made it easy for teams to do it again. It was obvious as early as November that teams were simply going to wait out players in hopes that the players would get desperate and sign. And what do you know? Here were Moustakas and Logan Morrison, both coming off 38-home run seasons, both signing for $6.5 million, the same sum as catcher Jonathan Lucroy. One-year deals abound, creating an even greater middle-class glut next offseason, when executives are going to put on their trapper hats and bargain hunt.

After the big 3 get signed next offseason, its going to get real interesting.

I am glad Boras was the agent that really took a beating.
