Suppose you are a close neighbor or family friend, you are totally allowed to shower them with gifts even if you are not a family member. You just have to establish that relationship long before the athletic stuff happens.

This dude met Bamba when he was 10 years old and has been a mentor since.
Now if he had just showed up when the guy was 17 years old and athletically becoming a superstar, that is a no-no.
