Morning Briefing: Time to pummel some doormats

NEW YORK -- And now time to beat up on some cellar-dwellers. Well, maybe.

Can the New York Mets take advantage of a final homestand during which they play three teams -- the Minnesota Twins (55-92), Atlanta Braves (56-90) and Philadelphia Phillies (65-82) -- that are a combined 88 games under .500?

Their quest to do so begins Friday at 7:10 p.m. ET, when Bartolo Colon(13-7, 3.27 ERA) opposes Twins right-hander Jose Berrios (2-6, 9.27).

The Giants beat the Cardinals on Thursday in the opener to a four-game series. So the Mets trail San Francisco by one game and lead St. Louis by one game for the two wild-card spots.

Twitter has spoken ... and offered little decisiveness. When Mets fans were asked whether they would prefer a Giants sweep, a Cardinals sweep or a split of their four-game series that began on Thursday night in San Francisco. Of the 3,062 people to respond, 41 percent wanted a split, while 30 percent wanted a Cardinals sweep and 29 percent wanted a Giants sweep.

this n that

Terry Collins announced that Jacob deGrom will start on Sunday. He had been sidelined with forearm inflammation.

Steven Matz will throw a full bullpen session on Saturday. That means Matz is getting closer to a return from a shoulder impingement.

Juan Lagares will be activated from the disabled list and rejoin the Mets on Friday. Lagares underwent surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left hand. Terry Collins wanted him back as a defensive replacement even if he's not ready to contribute at the plate.
Lagares has not advanced to batting practice against live pitching yet, so he is activated strictly to be a defensive replacement and pinch runner. Lagares had a ligament in his left thumb surgically repaired.

Wilmer Flores received a cortisone injection in his ailing right wrist during an exam Thursday with team doctors in Manhattan. He does not feel great on Friday, but hopes to resume play soon.

Lucas Duda will rejoin the Mets as soon as Saturday. He has been sidelined since May with a stress fracture in his lower back. Duda is on the 60-day DL, where he has not counted against the 40-man roster. Once he's activated, which may come as soon as Saturday, the Mets will either have to shift Jon Niese to the 60-day DL -- ending his season -- or subtract someone who is currently on the active roster. Niese had a slim shot of returning this season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus, but that seems like the best move unless the Mets know someone inconsequential who is currently active that they plan to dump this winter anyway.

Colon pitches Mets over Twins 3-0 as last homestand starts

Citi living: Mets have home wild-card game in their sights

Despite issuing two walks, Jeurys Familia on Friday recorded his 49th save, which matches the single-season record for a Dominican-born pitcher. Francisco Cordero in 2004 and Jose Valverde in 2011 also reached that save total. The Mets beat the Twins, 3-0.

Asdrubal Cabrera departed Friday's game after eight innings with what the Mets labeled a right leg cramp. That's the opposite leg from which Cabrera has been having knee difficulty. Cabrera slugged his 20th homer earlier in the game.

Morning Briefing: Time to keep pummeling some doormats

NEW YORK -- The New York Mets got their final homestand of the regular season off on the right foot Friday.

Now, Seth Lugo looks to keep things going against the Minnesota Twins.

Lugo (4-2, 2.40 ERA) opposes right-hander Ervin Santana (7-10, 3.53 ERA) on Saturday at 7:10 p.m. ET at Citi Field.

With the Giants’ second straight win against the Cardinals on Friday, the Mets opened a two-game lead on St. Louis for the second wild-card spot.

Breaking: Jacob deGrom has been scratched from Sunday's start and is likely to need surgery to address the ulnar nerve. He is done for the season.

:L

In reading up on ulnar nerve surgeries for pitchers, it seems a 3 to 6 month recovery time is what is expected. That's significantly less than Tommy John surgery. So Jacob deGrom conceivably could be fine by Opening Day 2017..

Rookie Gabriel Ynoa will start Sunday in place of Jacob deGrom, who is headed for surgery. Noah Syndergaard will remain Monday's starter on an extra day of rest.

The Mets have activated Lucas Duda before Saturday's game. Duda has been on the DL since May with a stress fracture in his lower back. He will probably be limited to pinch-hitting duty, at least initially.

Wilmer Flores reports improvement with his ailing right wrist, but he remains unable to swing a bat and is unavailable. Flores suffered the injury a week ago in a plate collision in Atlanta and received a cortisone injection on Thursday.

NY Mets lineup for Saturday's 7:10 p.m. ET game against the Minn. Twins at Citi Field.
Asdrubal Cabrera returns the day after departing with what was labeled a right leg cramp.

Reyes, 3B
Cabrera, SS
Cespedes, LF
Granderson, CF
Bruce, RF
T.J. Rivera, 2B
Loney, 1B
R. Rivera, C
Lugo, RHP

I really don't understand the logic of TC continually giving Jay (automatic K) Bruce all this playing time...when there are better options available on the bench.
It's the very definition of insanity:doing the same thing over & over & over and expecting a different result
.

Conforto, DeAza, Nimmo, Lagares....hell..and even Ty Kelly, Eric Campbell & Kelly Johnson are able to play in the OF if needed.

Went to the game, even with a lackluster effort the crowd was totally into it, everyone knew they'd come around in this one. Even late into the game when nobody was getting anything going the crowd stayed with it. Great atmosphere, every game matters.

With that said, I hated the Jay Bruce trade from the get go and hate it even more now. He flat out sucks. Liability defensively, no bat, doesn't appear into it, probably doesn't want to be here. Screw him. I'd also be OK if we've seen the last of D'Arnaud for the year.

Curtis!!! ....my favorite Granderson!!.....
:D

Curtis Granderson: first player in Mets history with two extra-inning HR in same game. His first tied the score; the second won it in 12th.

The Mets are now tied with the San Francisco Giants for the top wild-card spot, with the St. Louis Cardinals two games back. St. Louis rallied with two runs in the ninth to beat the Giants, 3-2, late Saturday.

Granderson homers in 11th and 12th, lifts Mets over Twins

* Mets' deGrom likely done for '16, is facing surgery

& Lucas Duda returns to Mets' roster; Steven Matz gets closer

Mets' gamble pays off as unlikely heroes step up

METS MOVE AHEAD IN NL WILD-CARD RACE
i
New York swept the Twins, who have the worst record in MLB, and moved ahead of the Giants for the No. 1 wild-card berth in the league. The Mets now host the Braves, who have the second-worst record. The Mets are getting solid starting pitching from unlikely sources.
