The Braves are about to pay Gonzalez to sit at home or play for someone else since he was DFA'd, so how is that much different from doing the same for Kemp?

And by cutting Kemp (and paying $43M over 2 years) as opposed to taking on the combo of Gonzalez/Kazmir/McCarthy contracts for a year), the Braves are spending a total of $53M.

So essentially they couldve gotten the same result (get rid of Kemp) for $10M less if they just cut him, considering nobody is expecting Kazmir/McCarthy to provide any value given for 2018 given their injury history and inconsistency.

Getting Culberson in the deal is better than just cutting Kemp. At least the Braves have something to show for the deal instead of just cutting Kemp and having him on the books in 2019.

The difference is, we owe Gonzalez nothing after 2018, and we won't owe Kazmir or McCarthy anything after 2018.

We'd owe Kemp for 2018 and 2019.

Braves aren't gonna be anywhere near luxury tax territory in either year, so I don't see why it's necessarily better to owe $53M to useless players in 2017 than $43M to a useless player for 2018-2019. You're still down $10M, which essentially seems like they're paying $10M for a utility man in Culbertson.

What part the Dodgers sending cash to make the money equal is confusing?

So assuming McCarthy/Kazmir don't contribute much (which is likely), it seems that the Braves essentially took on $10M in payroll for a utility player.

Not seeing how this is some sort of a great deal or steal for the Braves.

Nobody said it was a great deal or a steal. Just that the Braves got the better end of it.

The Dodgers didn't come out bad either, but the Braves accomplished priority number 1 of the offseason.

Are they sending $10M? What if it's $500K - then the Braves are essentially paying $9.5M for a utility guy.

Apparently the Braves FO felt that McCarthy looked healthy at the end of last season. Hoping he can pitch 150 innings or if healthy could be flipped at trade deadline. The key benefit you apparently aren't seeing is that Kemp's money is off the books for 2019. With approx 80 million to spend in 2019, it is possible the Braves could sign one of the plethora of free agents available in '19.

For me, I figured they would have to release Kemp, so taking a chance on a couple veteran pitchers and a good glove man that can play anywhere in the IF- is worth the risk. Having a spot for Acuna to play (even if it is a June call up) is pretty fucking exciting.

batting .344 today....

Everyone in LA thought he was washed up years ago. Great to see homegrown talent come back and thrive. He might see his first all-star appearance since 2012. Getting all nostalgic about his 2011 keMVP season.

Kemp can eat a dick. How was he even in a position to lose 40 pounds to begin with? Guess his heart never really left LA.

Watching him strikeout on a pitch 3 feet outside and hit into a double play last night brought back memories.
