What the hell are the Braves going to do with Adrian Gonzalez?

all of them should retire

We'll probably keep either McCarthy or Kazmir to have a veteran presence in the rotation, and if Camargo is gonna be the every day third baseman, Culberson will probably be the backup utility infielder. Maybe a homecoming will do wonders for Culberson.

Braves win this trade hands down, even if none of the players we got in return see the field.

We had to find a way to get rid of Kemp, who helped us to the worst left field defense in the Majors last season and a guaranteed strike out or double play every time he stepped to the plate.

Plus it clears room for ROnald Acuna, who is arguably the best prospect in baseball.

Culberson performed at a very high level in the playoffs. He just has no place on the team once a lot of these guys come off the DL. He's a great get for any bench imo.

They could've just cut Kemp (like they did with Adrian Gonzalez) to clear room for Acuna, no?

Not sure how that makes them clear winners...they could've just cut the 1 player they didn't need instead of trading for 3 potentially useless players (hard to expect anything out of Kazmir/McCarthy) and would've saved wouldve saved around $10 million in the process (Kemp over the next 2 years makes $43M while the other 3 make about $53 combined).

McCarthy, Kazmir and McCarthy's contracts all come off the books after this season, while if we had just cut Kemp, we'd have to do like Dan Uggla and pay him this season and next season to either sit at home or play for someone else.

It was really the only way we were gonna be able to move Kemp, other than pairing him with a more desireable player and getting a lesser return like we did when we paired BJ Upton with Craig Kimbrel in a trade to San Diego.

Basically, it's a move to get us Braves fans' hopes up for next season's free agency class seeing as how we'll have money to spend, but then, we won't get anyone anyways.

Basically, it was taking on 3 bad contracts with one year remaining plus a backup infielder in exchange for a bad contract with 2 years left on it.

More money coming off the books after this season. No more Matt Kemp. Ronald Acuna is ready and waiting.

The Braves are about to pay Gonzalez to sit at home or play for someone else since he was DFA'd, so how is that much different from doing the same for Kemp?

And by cutting Kemp (and paying $43M over 2 years) as opposed to taking on the combo of Gonzalez/Kazmir/McCarthy contracts for a year), the Braves are spending a total of $53M.

So essentially they couldve gotten the same result (get rid of Kemp) for $10M less if they just cut him, considering nobody is expecting Kazmir/McCarthy to provide any value given for 2018 given their injury history and inconsistency.

The difference is, we owe Gonzalez nothing after 2018, and we won't owe Kazmir or McCarthy anything after 2018.

We'd owe Kemp for 2018 and 2019.

Dodgers sent more money in deal. The money is an absolute wash. Happy to have Culberson as a utility guy and if McCarthy can stay healthy (big if) the Braves get a relatively cheap (veteran starter) for a year that they claim to want.

Bottom line: Dodgers get below the luxury tax and the Braves clear room for Acuna.
