Mariners trade for A's Alonso for stretch run

They get back a left handed power hitter. He is hitting .266 with 22 homeruns and 49 rbis so far. Reading that he has slumped a bit since the all star break, but nice to get some extra pop to mix in with our already potent lineup.

We desperately need a reliable starter though

I think I'm done with Dipoto. This trade doesn't even remotely make the slightest bit of sense to me.

He has 22 HRs this year, but had only 19 HRs in the previous 343 games. We didn't give up much for Alonso, but I just don't get the trade, Valencia hasn't played poorly.

Danny Valencia 2015-2017: 337 games, 62 doubles, 47 HRs, 174 RBIs, .281/.337/.458 4.4 WAR
Yonder Alonso 2015-2017: 359 games, 69 doubles, 34 HRs, 136 RBIs, .266/.346/.416 3.2 WAR

Alonso is hitting .188 against righties this year, so we essentially added a platoon player who is having a career year not in line with his prior numbers. Alonso has had a solid career hitting righties, but is useless against lefties.

Once again another move by JD that only marginally improves the team at best.

We turned a AAA guy who was 1 bad twitter apology away from a year long ban into an actual major league hitter who has a track record. How can anyone think there's a downside to this? Except of course that now Boog Powell won't be going into the HoF with an M's cap : (

I like adding a decent bat, but not exactly sure where he fits. Boog isn't a big loss, but hope this doesn't put Danny on the back burner. Btw, Danny is mashing today!

Danny historically hits lefties much better than righties, Alonso hits righties better than lefties. They're likely going to platoon. I think Danny is only hitting like .250 against righties this year and Alonso is at like .290 against righties and like .190 against lefties. Might be a bit off on those numbers but after looking at their splits, I think that's about right.

Yonder Alonso this year vs. RHP: 91 gms 18 HRs 40 RBIs .286/.391/.577
Yonder Alonso this year vs. LHP: 56 gms 4 HRs 9 RBIs .188/.278/.406

Danny Valencia this year vs. RHP: 95 gms 8 HRs 33 RBIs .256/.300/.389
Danny Valencia this year vs. LHP: 45 gms 4 HRs 23 RBIs .297/.368/.505

Yonder Alonso career vs. RHP: 707 gms 51 HRs 222 RBIs .277/.348/.421
Yonder Alonso career vs. LHP: 343 gms 10 HRs 66 RBIs .236/.305/.347

Danny Valencia career vs. RHP: 653 gms 54 HRs 212 RBIs .248/.290/.394
Danny Valencia career vs. LHP: 406 gms 30 HRs 147 RBIs .318/.372/.501

In this context it makes sense.

Eh, it's not a move that moves the needle for me one way or the other. I can see the negative in terms it hurts bench depth in terms of athleticism but not outraged.

2 month rental for a guy they never wanted because of his well publicized issues. If they can re-sign Alonso and Velancia for next year. then it is a good move. Remember Velancia can play 3B and OF corners so it would be a good depth move. I guess I like it more than most because Alonso is on my fantasy team.

I don't mind this trade just because the Mariners really didn't give up much to get Alonso. Hopefully he has some clutch at bats for the team down the stretch.

Agreed... I'm tired of him... We need pitching, not another 1B who has similar stats to our current 1B...

Realistically there is really only Verlander out there as a semi decent pitcher but the Mariners aren't going to pay for that. The O'Neill screwed any potential starting pitcher deal Jerry can do unless he is giving up key members of the offense.

Sources: #Tigers, #Astros have had contact this month regarding possible Justin Verlander trade; unclear if there is momentum in talks. @MLB

The Astros have prospects that Detroit would take and eat some of the contract though. O'Neill or Lewis were the only two guys the Mariners could package in terms of just prospects and Detroit would even think of paying a penny of Verlanders contract. I'm a novice obviously but it seems Jerry or more especially ownership doesn't realize the long term ramification of dealing a top prospect for an upside number 4 starter.

I get some fans using Moyer as a rebuttal but to me that is silly.

This trade doesn't do much for me. Basically we are getting a platoon at first base. Which is what we thought would be the case going into the start of the season. What is getting overlooked is Alonso has a higher .OPS than any current Mariner player, how that translates to a new team we will see.

My take away is this might make the offense better but I am not convinced this adds wins. Right now the way this team will need to win is beating the other teams offense. This team will need to explode offensively to get consistent wins. The pitching is a terrible joke, we are running Erasmo Ramirez and Marco Gonzales out there, both guys we traded for....:L

And losing Phelps is huge. This team might actually be worse after the trade deadline because of this injury and Felix going down.

Who got excited for them though? Sexson maybe and maybe the spring training crush people had with Lee but none of the others I remember anyone getting excited for.

Have to agree with Wazzu here.

Montero was the only one that we all had high expectations for. Big Richie met his expectations for the first two years, but fell off immediately after and we ALL criticized him relentlessly. Almost felt bad for all the boos he received when he was here after his first two solid years.

Verlander is an overpaid #3 at this point in his career, but that's still better than everything we have aside from Paxton.

Very true but the M's have like 9 number 5's under "team control" opening up the wallet is the only way this team will ever get over the hump. At least for the next 3 years every deadline (if they are in it) they will need starting pitching and can't offer shit but money.
