It in a way makes perfect sense. The MLBPA automatically has to appeal a suspension which makes them look horrible in this situation, so I think Manfred just struck a deal that if they drop the appeal in the off-season. He says he doesn't want to punish the other Astros but I think it is mostly not making the players look foolish twice.

And if Darvish isn't all upset then why does it piss off so many people?

its what we do now. makes us feel better about our pathetic lives and racist comments we made in the past

Somehow I get the feeling you don't feel that bad about those.

Manfred missed an opportunity though. He should have suspended him 2 games starting right then, knowing the union/Gurriel would appeal. Gurriel would still play in the WS but Manfred looks like a big man for 'trying' to suspend him for the WS.

But no-one really wins though. Manfred looks like a moron becsuse he knew it would get appealed and the union looks like jackasses for appealing it. No win situation to me.

I just don't get the overreaction in our country over it. It's not like Gurriel hasn't played in Japan and South Korea before, I'm sure the gesture wasn't meant the same way Billy Bob Joe would by making the same one.

Sure, but is it better or worse than how he did it?

The double standards here are unbelievable.

Had this been a white guy who made a racial gesture to a black pitcher the fucking World series itself would have been canceled.

5 games next year????? ...what a joke.

May I remind you of this:

Donald Sterling said this to his girlfriend in the privacy of his own house.

"It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you're associating with black people", and, "You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want", but "the little I ask you is ... not to bring them to my games".

His punishment:

Lifetime ban from the NBA.
2.5 million dollar fine.
He had to sell his team.

Now tell me again that things are treated equally.

That would keep him from sending $5K to Puerto Rico?

you said he never had to account for that in his life.

This isn't some spoiled brat from so cal.

This dude lived under Castro his whole life. He'd have made $100m by now if he was born anywhere else.

Yeah I knew he'd get a suspension but I didn't think it would be 5 games... even Darvish himself brushed this incident off

Amazing how Jeremy Lin and Darvish act with class and like adults.

Everyone else races to the bottom trying to claim they're the biggest victim...

Everyone wants to play the race card right now and throw people under the bus. Good to see these two don't

Ironically, I wonder if their heritage has anything to do with it

some reports I read people of their heritage were pissed, some weren't. Either way it was extremely STUPID of Yurri to do that and there is no place for it but in the grand scheme of things that was nothing... Then again the argument could be made, "well even something that small shouldn't be tolerated and could lead to something bigger."

I think he just got caught up in the heat of the moment, didn't think and made the gesture to him saying, "man, my eyes were so wide when I saw that pitch and I nailed it" but it came out as being "racist"

Apparently the term he used he very commonly used in Cuba. Frankly I think it's all over blown.

Pillar

Escobar.

suspensions for saying mean things is pretty fucking ridiculous in what is supposed to be an adult world.

but no, lets treat them like children.

well if the league truly wanted to make it an issue and make a huge "stance" on it then they would have suspended him immediately and worried about the player unions fighting it
