Donald Lutz called up

The Reds have called up outfielder Donald Lutz from Double-A.

Lutz, 24, has hit for power in the minor-league career, but struggles with strikeouts. Despite decent slugging numbers, Lutz's average is just .211 this year. He's taking the place of Chris Heisey, who was put on the disabled list with a strained hamstring.

Lutz has some power. I just can't figure out how Dusty is going to keep from hitting back to back lefty hitters in a lineup with Choo, Votto, Bruce, Lutz and sometimes players Paul, Hannahan and (SH) Robinson. Going to be interesting.

During the Reds' TV broadcast, they stated that Lutz had tweeted he was being called up. Unusual for a Reds' player to release the information before the club's official release. I'm sure he'll hear about that one.

Nothing like getting a promotion, then an azz whipping when you arrive. Lets hope he makes it worth the trouble.

These injuries just keep on coming. I am starting to feel like this is going to be one of those years when nothing goes your way, and at the end of the year were going to be battling the Cubs, to see who is going to be in last place. Thank god the Astros went into the American league

Injuries ? Cueto shouldn't be out long, a hell of a lot less than Votto was last year when they won 97. If anyone thought Ryan Ludwick was the key cog in the offense is missing something. Heisey has never played regularly. Marshall missed 3 weeks. What the Reds are going through now is less than most teams deal with...Choo is a huge improvement over Stubbs, and Mesoraco is hitting better than Hannigan hit last year. Hannahan is better than Cairo. I don't see injuries as the reason they get less than 6 hits half the time. We're lucky to be 1-1/2 games back... But if this offense can't regularly score 4 runs, they might not be that close long.

I think the notion that losing Ludwick so early forced the Reds to move BP into the 4 spot, which really did mean having to put Cozart there. I don't know that Ludwick would have been all that productive but I do know that the 2 spot would be better than it has been.

I still think the Reds would be better off with Phillips in the 2 hole...or just remove Cozart to the 8th spot and move everyone else up...bunch the hitters instead of tossing a .200 hitter in front of the best hitter on the team.

Did you hear Dusty's "welcome" for Lutz ?"...I told him he has an opportunity, even though he didn't earn it"...gee, Dusty...that was really nice.

How exactly does a guy NOT earn the opportunity?

I agree that moving everyone else up in the order makes sense.
Just when I really believe that, Cozart has something of a useful game.

Didn't Lutz hit the cover off the ball in spring training? How is that not earning it? I guess Patterson, Stubb's, Renteria and many of the "Dusty boys" that couldn't hit their weight, did earn their spot.

I think I can translate Dusty... I think he meant Lutz came up because of injury not his overwhelming performance so far in the minors. Still, a real azz wipe thing to say, IMO
