If I'm not mistaken, Mack Brown was the #3 all time winningest coach in the BCS era. He won a Natty and played for another one. Also came close to playing for 2 more in '01 and '08.
Oh no shit? What number did he wear?

First off, I don't consider Lou Holtz, John Robinson or Mack Brown to really be among those whom I would call "great" coaches. Very good, yes; but not great. Other good coaches with national championships who have retired are: Gene Stallings (1 title at Alabama), Jerry Moore (3 1-AA titles at Appalachian St & a win at Michigan), and Darrell Mudra (2 D-2 titles at Eastern Illinois, plus a "declared" D-2 title at North Dakota St. in the days before playoffs).

As far as the "great" coaches go, here's how I would rank them:

1. Larry Kehres (Mount Union), 332-24-3 (.929) with 11 D-3 national titles & 5 runners-up, with 9 undefeated seasons and 8 straight appearances in the D-3 National Championship game, with two separate 3-year title runs.

2. Tom Osborne (Nebraska) 255-49-3 (.836), 2.5 national titles, with 3 undefeated seasons.

3. Barry Switzer (Oklahoma 157-29-4 (.837), 2.5 national titles, but only 1 undefeated season.

4. Ara Parseghian (Miami of Ohio, Northwestern, Notre Dame) 170-58-4 (.741), 2 national titles, 1 unbeaten, untied season, one unbeaten season with a tie.

5. Jim Tressell (Youngstown St., Ohio St.) 241-79-2 (.755) before vacated wins, 229-79-2 (.742) afterwards. 4 1-AA titles with one unbeaten, one-tie season at YSU & 1 FBS title & an unbeaten season at OSU.

6. LaVell Edwards (BYU) 175-42-2 (.803), with a national championship & one unbeaten team.

7. Bobby Bowden (West Virginia, Florida St.) 399-129-4 (.754) before vacated wins, 377-129-4 (.743) afterward. Two national titles, one undefeated season.

8. Vince Dooley (Georgia) 201-77-10 (.715), 1 national title, 1 undefeated season.

9. Mel Tjeerdsma (Austin College, Northwest Missouri St.) 242-82-4 (.744), with 3 D-2 titles & 4 runners-up, 1 undefeated season.

10. Lloyd Carr (Michigan) 122-40 (.753), with one-half a national championship & 1 undefeated season.

11. Steve Spurrier (Duke, Florida, South Carolina) 228-89-2, one national championship.

12. Frosty Westering (Parsons College, Lea College, Pacific Lutheran) 303-96-7 (.755), 3 NAIA championships, 1 D-3 championship, one unbeaten, once-tied team.

13. John Gagliardi (Carroll College, St. Johns-MN) 489-138-11 (.775), 2 NAIA titles with an unbeaten season prior to the first title, 2 D-3 titles & 1 runner-up, 4 unbeaten, untied seasons & 1 unbeaten, one tie season.

14. Roy Kidd (Eastern Kentucky) 314-124-8 (.713), with 2 1-AA titles, two runners-up & 1 undefeated season.

Yeah going 11-2 year after year after year at Texas in the Big12 conference, although not hard to do, will get you up there in overall wins fast.

You do realize there was about a 5 year stretch where the big 12 was considered the best conference in college football, right? Mack was there for all of it.

Can't believe I just came to the defense of the whorns... :L

These need to be switched.
Barry was 12-5 vs Tom
11 Conference Championships vs 7
3 NC's vs Zero in that time frame.
And Switzer had 2 undefeated seasons. 1973 and 1974

Added to the list

Barry Switzer
Tom Osborne
Jimmy Johnson
Bobby Bowden
Steve Spurrier
LaVell Edwards
Lou Holtz
John Robinson
Vince Dooley
Phil Fulmer
Bill McCartney
Gene Stallings
Mack Brown
Jim Tressell
Danny Ford
Howard Schnellenberger
Les Miles
Larry Coker
Loyd Carr 1/2

Any list that has Phil Fulmer ahead of Gene Stallings is immediately suspect...and LaVell Edwards needs to drag his shit down with Carr.

Yep...hate it though.

Barry Switzer had a hell of a lot better record than Jimmy Johnson in the college ranks.

Head to Head: Barry Switzer 5-3 vs. Jimmy Johnson
College Records: Switzer 157-29-4 --------- Jimmy Johnson 81-34-3
National Championships: Barry Switzer 3 ------ Jimmy Johnson: 1

Pro Football: Switzer also took Jimmy Johnson's team in Dallas and won a Super Bowl with them.

And he was so good he won Back To Back National Championships while on probation.
Who else has ever been able to do that.
Nick Saban at Alabama? Alabama was on probation for something like 30 years, I don't remember when it ended.

You're joking right? You're questioning the strength of the Big 12 during Mack's tenure when the Pac 10 was ruled by only one team 95% of the time while Mack was coaching? Oh, and Mack's team beat the only relevant team from the Pac 10 during the BCS era. SC ran through the PAC with ease during the Carroll era. There is a reason only 1 Pac team has won a natty in the last 27 years.....
