Letang To Miss At Least Six Weeks After Having A Stroke - Pittsburgh Penguins - News
Penguins defenseman Kris Letang will miss at least six weeks after having a stroke last week, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manger Ray Shero.

The condition is treatable with blood thinners and at this point is not believed to be career threatening.

Further testing also revealed that Letang, 26, has had a very small hole in the wall of his heart since birth. This small defect in the wall is present in all individuals before birth but seals shut in most people. It is possible that the hole in the heart led to the stroke.

“Kris had one brief episode of dizziness and nausea last week,” Shero said. “We held him out of the Los Angeles game Thursday night, and when he continued to feel ill, tests conducted in Phoenix on Saturday gave us the first indication of his condition. Further testing then was conducted when he returned to Pittsburgh, and he continued to undergo a battery of tests here this week.”

You see, if you people read my injury posts :P

I'm actually slightly relieved. I found out last night it was heart related, so I thought up some terrible things. This is actually better than some of the stuff I was thinking up. Take your time Tanger, heal up.

When he didn't dress for the game in LA last week, I assumed they gave Bortuzzo the nod due to some of the players mothers traveling with the team for that game and the next in PHX. That's why Zatkoff got the start in goal in LA. They showed Letang during that game and he was smiling and laughing so it made even more sense cause he looked fine.

But when he didn't dress against PHX......I knew him not playing the previous game had nothing to do with Bortuzzo's mother being there. I didn't know what was up.

Wow, that is scary to hear. Hopefully he is going to be all right. Not a good season for him injury wise. Poor guy.

That's crazy, and I'm not surprised, figured it was something with the heart.

WOW ... I just read about this. Hope he will be ok ... always hate to hear about these kind of things. I hope it's treatable and he is able to still be out there on the ice.

The Penguins are apparently moving forward not expecting him to return this season. Simply would consider it a bonus.

buddy of mine has been dealing with the same thing, hes quite a bit older(50s) but ironically was very fit and playing ice hockey 2-3 times a week before it happened. He has been struggling with it the last 3-4 years now with several "spells" since then. Its not good for every day living no less being a top athlete. Hope all goes well for Letang.

Yeah heart murmurs can cause some major issues. I have a son with one at birth but it healed but when they told us about they said this could be an affect when older if it didn't heal.
