It may sound simplistic, but he was given more chances and opportunities for help than most so I don't feel sorry for him. Condolences to his family.

He had countless opportunities to straighten out, but refused to do so.

Benning was talking about it this morning. If anyone didn't hear, give it a listen on the podcast. Lack of faith in authority figures, watching his mom get abused by gangsters she was with, etc. just made him so he didn't feel like he could trust anybody. Then, when someone would let him down (for instance, his GF that was cheating on him) he would react like a child. Unfortunately, that's a child that is in a body that has the capacity to do a lot of damage.

he was a great running back
he came from a troubled life in LA and TO gave him a chance
his troubles escaladed after leaving the Husker land
he had some rough tides to get over ---but couldn't just get er done
