When NFL Contracts Want a Pound of Flesh | The MMQB with Peter King

I cringed when I saw reports that Eddie Lacy’s deal with the Seahawks includes weight clauses, with maximum earnings of $385,000. I get that he has struggled with weight (he reportedly weighed in at 267 last week), but I learned the hard way—as an agent and team executive—that these clauses are counterproductive and detrimental to a player’s health.

In the days, hours and even minutes before scheduled weigh-ins, I discovered that players would sit in saunas and steam rooms, run on the treadmill in rubber suits and, among other tactics, use diuretics to drain water weight. Whether they made their target weight or not, these methods would deplete them of strength and glycogen storage for days or weeks to come. Teams should have evolved their approach by now; they could use measurements for body fat or take DEXA scans, which measure bone density. These methods would be more productive and beneficial for both the team and player. This is an area ripe for change.

I hope the Seahawks organization can keep him away from the buffet table.

Reminds me of a time some years ago when I was at a casino buffet here and Na'il Diggs was sitting at the next table. He put away serious amounts of food. But he wasn't fat.

Some athletes seem to burn fat better than others.

some athletes are better disciplined to stay in shape

This...

Big difference between stuffing your face every once in a while, and it becoming apart of your lifestyle.

Obviously there's a genetic factor for some people, but that's often used as an excuse far more than it's true.

If your career and millions of dollars are on the line, and you've been publicly shamed for your weight on a national stage... yet, you STILL can't stop yourself from getting fat. You have a problem. No different from any other kind of an addict.

The thing is, that this is kind of irrelevant in Lacy's case. Lacy is getting asked to maintain a HEALTHY weight, over the course of an NFL contract.

He's not a UFC fighter, being forced to cut down to some inhumane weight, temporarily... in order to fight down in weight-class for a title belt.

If Lacy simply makes a healthy lifetstyle change, he won't need to worry about his weight or making any ridiculous last minute cuts. Period.

When you guys drafted him I thought he would be a monster. I could see him dominating late in games. I'm glad for my team he did not put the effort out to be great. Shame for you guys tho. He could have been a real factor.

We think he will do just fine for Seattle. Just as Lambeau Legs thanked Seahawk fans for C Michael (again, you are welcome) I thank LL for Eddie.

I will miss Lacy. I dont think he will be a problem unless an injury happens which is possible. The concern would be for your OL imo. Since you guys were able to add the weight clauses into the contract that will hold his feet to the fire.

Twitter is going to bite so many athletes in the ass. You have to be careful what you put out for public consumption because if you make it to the national stage people will find it and use it against you. I liked Eddie and I wish him well personally but hope the team finds no success :dhd:

He was inactive for the most recent game. Doesn't look like he'll have much success in Seattle. He may as well hit the buffet.

Genes play a part. Some people can eat what they want and not work out and still lose weight. Then there's most of us who have to exercise, eat right to maintain or lose weight because our genes don't give us that mutant power. I have a friend who worked 2nd shift, he would get home at 11 at night, eat a full meal and wouldn't gain a pound. I look at food and gain weight. Point is, genes play a big part in weight just as much as exercising and dieting. If you know you have fat genes then you have to exercise and eat right so you don't become a fat body.

Yes... This all lines up with what I said. Of course genes play a part, but it's not an excuse. Some have to work harder than others, but they can always get in shape. I would argue that being brought up with poor eating habits is much more detrimental than genetics. Thankfully, there is being progress made in this country now. Over the past 5-6 years, "personal trainer" is one of the highest in-demand professions in the country.

Definitely not an excuse. Me personally, I don't have the luxury of eating whatever I want and not workout. Im sure this is the case for Lacy. If doesn't make a change in his life style when it comes to his diet he will eat himself out of the league.
