So why did he struggle so much in oalkand? Seems like they had decent talent.

Doesnt really matter though, this is petes defense.

Guys liked Norton when he was the LB coach here. No reason they wouldn't like him as DC.

I like this hire. As has been mentioned, this is Pete's defense. This is about who is going to pass along the message to where it sticks, and Ken Norton is who I think this defense needs.

What's old is new again.

Knows the system, Pete knows what he's getting, pretty safe IMO. Still think it's weird that Richard is getting the axe though....

If Richard is really getting the boot, then hiring Norton to replace him is the best-case scenario. He knows the system and he knows the players. Considering how much of a shock the idea of letting Richard go is to us, it has to be an even bigger shock to the players. That is, of course, unless something happened behind-the-scenes to bring it about and the players knew it was coming. In either case, bringing someone in that they're familiar with and who is familiar with them to replace Richard was a smart move. If the players saw it coming, then hiring someone they're familiar with and who is familiar with them reinforces the idea that the decision was necessary to move forward. If the players didn't see it coming, then hopefully hiring someone they already know and presumably respect with put to rest any thoughts of wholesale changes coming sooner rather than later.

Richards was doing some stuff that was pissing some of the players off... He was mixing in his own flavor and it wasn't getting very good results at times... I feel like replacing him is a good thing going into next year...

I've heard others say the same, but that not a accurate take. What Pete wants is a staff that shares his philosophy. Pete has a Vince Lombardi attitude about football, in that he doesn't try to win by fooling teams on what they run, he want to win by running plays so well you can't stop it. Pete has never been one that minds others speaking their mind IMO, he's been criticized for being to open minded about it in fact.

The " he wants yes men" take are from those that want big names and flash and not surprisingly are the very ones that wanted Bevell fired.

I have to agree, especially with the part about people being allowed to speak their minds. He's gotten plenty of criticism over the years for allowing just that. Someone who was just looking for "yes men" in his coaching staff wouldn't tolerate half the stuff he's been criticized for letting his players get away with.
