The Phillies won't find a a quality reliever out there who can match Paps' performance over the last 3 years. Why trade him, eat $10 million of his salary, then get some mediocre guy who might get 20 saves. The lack of runs in 2013, down 80 from 2012, put more pressure on the bullpen more often. JP, 34 next week, has lost some velocity so his Ks decreased, K/9 inn, down from 11.8 to 8.3, but it seems like he should still be capable of 30-40 saves because he can still pitch. Who is out there whom we could count on for the same or better performance?

Well, they're not going to be very good even with him, so it's not like they're going to be worse without him - he went 2-3 weeks without a save a bunch of times last season - they need to trade him, he's not worth his money and the way this team is constructed, they're not going to be any better with him or worse without him

What type of clown thinks it's a good idea to pay big money for a closer?

Papelbon is a known quantity. He's still near the top of his game. The stats show it. The Phils had 16 blow saves; Paps had 7, Bastardo 3. Boston had 24 blsv but scoring was not a problem for them. Papelbon's record will improve with more run support. The Phillies are stronger if he stays because other BP guys like Diekman, Bastardo, and DeFratus may likely improve.

Yeah, you look like just the type of guy to completely overvalue saves. Fits in very nicely with the rest of your "logic."

lol. But we're going to score 100 more runs next year. Go to the bank.

So, you agree with me? You're an idiot and saves are an overrated stat? (overrated usually by idiots like you).

No, I don't agree with you. I'm saying each situation is different. A team can save a closer from a blown save if, for example, they get back in the bottom of the 9th the run that was just scored off the closer in the top of the inning. Like when the lead was lost in the top of the ninth and PH'ers Nix/JMJ/Frandsen/DY/MY fizzle with risp. Sometimes a better team can save the closer but not always. I do realize idiots like you need more time for study and contemplation.

Paps is still effective. Also, I wonder how many times a closer will try to protect a one run lead or a two run lead, knowing the results of those stats may tell us more about the pitcher.

I guess you would have to go thru the game logs. I did find that Paps saved 16 of 19 opportunities in CBP, working 35 innings, giving up 40 hits, 16 runs (14 earned), 3 HR, 35 Ks, 6 BBs, while posting a lousy 3.60 ERA. All his decisions came at CBP, 5-1. I wonder why he sucked at home.

And Bastardo couldn't do a similar job? Hate to break it to you champ, I know saves are a huge stat for you, but with Paps as the closer last year, the Phillies were dead last in the saves department. Dead fucking last with 32 saves.

KEEP PAPS 13 MILLION WHO GIVES A FUCK TRY TO EXTEND HIM AS A MATTER OF FACT

Paps had 29/32 of Phils saves. We had a shitty BP. Bastardo has been inconsistent so you can't say he can be the closer. Saves must be important. Kimbrel had 51/53 saves for ATL. It's hard to make sense of saves as a team stat. I would have expected BOS to be high in saves. Maybe someone can make sense of what's below if you're bored.

Bastardo was a better pitcher than Paps in 2013. There's no reason he couldn't be the Opening Day closer if Papelbon is traded.

Bastardo did have great year, his best. I'd prefer to have them both. But Antonio could step in to close if anything happened to Paps, trade or injury, but it might be scary.
