MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that Justin Upton is "close to a deal" with the Tigers.

There had been some speculation that Upton might have to settle for a one-year contract and then try free agency again next winter, but FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal says he'll be getting a six-year, $132.75 deal that includes an opt-out after the second year. It's a reasonable commitment for the Tigers, especially considering Upton is just 28. He'll take over as Detroit's left fielder.

This signing is going to have a domino effect for the Tigers... Moya is going to be traded almost GUARANTEED.

I nutted in my pants when I saw this... I am not going to lie. Upton was the best possible option to put in LF imo. Paying big money for Cespedes would haunt the Tigers... Upton still only 28.

Would rather have seen 30mil spent on a stud pitcher instead of on Upton and Pelfrey.

But if we had to go big on an outfielder, I'm fine with the way they did it.

Didn't expect this.

Agree totally. Would rather have seen them go for Grienke.. and I didn't expect it.. but I am not going to complain. Their lineup is going to be sick. Last year's injury issues hopefully are healed and the team can get back to its place as a contender.

I'm never going to be a huge advocate of big FA spending on a corner outfielder. Especially one that isn't a lefty.

But....... this is/was the year to do it. If you're gonna do it. Definitely upgraded the talent on the roster. And opened up a lot of options for trades. Without costing us anything but money and a roster spot.

I've always thought Upton had more potential than he's had production. Be great to see him change that as a Tiger. (Weird that he came to a team that had been on his no trade list. Detroit was, right? Seems like I rememeber that being in the conversation here in the past. Maybe I'm wrong.)

More offense has to help a pitcher staff that's a little lacking.....

I don't think he had a no trade list. He was on his rookie deal.. and nobody gets a no trade on their rookie deal.

Might as well spend on free agents this year... next year's free agents are crap.

Upton is totally a case of upside not catching completely up with his production.. but to be honest.. if the guy wasn't hyped so much his production would be thought of as more than expectable. AND the fact that he is only 28 means that there is no reason to believe his best years are not still in front of him. Not catching your upside is a little more of a problem at the age of 30 than 28. 27/28 yrs old is what most people deem the beginning of prime years.

He had a no trade list, just can't find if we were on it. The Blue Jays, Cubs, Indians and Brewers are the four I can find. Coulda sworn we were too...

Upton DID have the Tigers on his no trade list at one time....but he took them off in 2014. Cubs, Clev, Toronto, and Mil were his 4 no-trade teams last year.

Pelfrey is gonna suck balls. The only acquisition I hate.

Lets be honest Upton came to detroit to become JVS favorite Upton. No really though he came to detroit to deal the rewards of batting in front of miggy, vmart and jmart so he can get a max contract in two years elsewhere. He also has security in case he gets injured with the six year deal. His agent deserves a fuck8ng raise.
