Cubs acquired LHP Jose Quintana from the White Sox for OF Eloy Jiménez, RHP Dylan Cease, 1B Matt Rose, and INF Bryant Flete.

The first big trade-deadline domino has fallen, with the defending World Series champs securing a top-flight starting pitcher as they aim to rebound from a disappointing first half. Quintana owns a 4.49 ERA in 104 1/3 innings this season, but he was in a nice groove leading into the All-Star break and the 28-year-old left-hander carries a very team-friendly contract that could keep him in a Cubs uniform through 2020. In return, the White Sox get more high-upside talent for their suddenly-stacked farm system. Jimenez is among the top prospects in the sport, and Cease was recently rated the Cubs' No. 2 prospect by Baseball America.

I was just thinking earlier today how we're getting close to the deadline and not only had no deals been done, but not even a ton of rumors or anything! Anyway, I think this is a good deal for the Cubs! And at the same time, not necessarily a bad one for the Sox either. But if I had to name a winner, I think I'd go with the Cubbies here.

White Sox really positioning themselves well for the future, IF Moncada doesnt completely bust......I know the Yankees are in talks with them on David Robertson, but i believe thats more of a salary dump than a big prospect haul

Quintana stunk it up at the start of the season, he was better before the ASB but still had a couple mediocre performances. We shall see how the players that CWS got pan out but Quintana appears to have been over-hyped based on results to this point. He still has time to put it all together as well so........

Ugh... I like Quintana but I don't think I would have traded Jimenez. Plus side is with Quintana and Hendricks coming back that should solidify the staff

I agree, it seems the White Sox have done almost as well as they did in the Sale deal here, and Quintana isnt half the pitcher

This sounds like a package the White Sox may have taken for Sale if the Cubs jumped at it this winter

His strikeout rate and his walk rate are at career highs. Could be a mechanical issue and if the Cubs think they can correct it, it's a good deal.

Qs biggest issue is he allows his pitch count to go high and cant make it out of the 5th/6th enough.

Chicago Bombshell: White Sox trade Jose Quintana to Cubs for four prospects

Great haul for the White Sox, though I think it's fair for both sides. Quintana hasn't been as sharp as he was in previous years mostly due to an increased walk rate and home runs (though everyone's giving up home runs this year), but he's pitched well as of late (2.70 ERA, 45/16 K/BB, 40 IP, 3.40 FIP, 3.52 xFIP). Even with the walks, his K-BB% (15.5%) is in line with 2013-15 (they ranged from 15.2% to 15.6%). Biggest thing is Quintana is under an affordable contract for 3.5 years.

Cubs can afford to trade prospects, most of their position players are in their early/mid 20's. I think trading Cease might hurt more than Jimenez. The other two guys are organizational depth.

Also, the Cubs outfield is pretty crowded for the foreseeable future (Almora, Schwarber, Heyward, Happ). Not sure where Jimenez would slot in barring a bunch of trades. Happ was a 2B, but the infield has Russell and Baez.

Quintana is solid but I don't think he was worth what the Cubs had to give up for him

What? How could you possibly not say the White Sox?

#1 and #2 prospects in the Cubs organization... two additional prospects. For a pitcher with a 4.50 ERA.

The White Sox got the Chris Sale haul all over again, for an "okay #2" or "very good #3".

The thing is, that you don't just give up prospects for less than their value, simply because they may not have a clear spot waiting for them. Q did not warrant the return that the White Sox got. I am both stunned and elated.

Simply because it's a different time of year, doesn't mean they didn't overpay.

You can say he will be "reborn"... but he hasn't been good. Period. That's a leap of faith.
