The Reds announced Lamb had surgery for a herniated disc Monday. He was shutdown prior to the season ending for a left elbow injury. Back surgery in back to back off seasons, not a good sign.

Between poor performance and an extensive injury history, makes me wonder how many more chances he has to prove himself.

I didn't under why the sent Lamb down. He had some pretty good games before he fell off at the end, and they could have put him in the pen

Lamb is also probably arthritic if he has disk issues. He may end up as a career AAA pitcher.

NO-body will claim him. He will get a minor league contract.

I'd say that is the strategy. DFA him while he's injured, hope he clears waivers and outright him to Louisville.

They already have written off the 2017 season so they can do this trannie and clear the roster spot.

Lamb has potential to be a decent pitcher either as a 4 or 5 starter, or bullpen. but the Reds have a whole roster full of possible 4 or 5 starters. So Lamb being injured makes him the odd man out. Unfortunately for the Reds and most of the league, there are not a lot of top of the rotation pitchers out there

What makes Lamb marketable is

a. He's a lefty
b. He's still young
c. He's cheap
d. He's a lefty
e. He has an agent
f. He has big-league innings behind him.

Did I mention he's a lefty?

The "Silence of the Lamb" has reached it's conclusion, traded to the Rays for cash considerations.

Generally a player is put on waivers and within 3 days you know the result. I thought Lamb might be exploring the option of not accepting the assignment, but as it turns out the Reds were working out the details of a trade.

I think the Reds thought he would clear waivers, but the Rays probably surprised them by claming him. Sometimes when you see a waived player traded it's because the waiving club had revocable waiver rights on that player. I'm assuming that was the case with John Lamb.

Another undocuemented assumption on my part is that that the cash considerations may be in the form of a portion of the Rays' unused International Pool money that would reduce the Reds monetary penalty for exceeding their pool limit.

Lamb has relevant value based on my previous post. If you can get a guy who is "fixable" for a cash transaction, it has to be considered a low-risk win. If the cash is to balance the Reds books on international signings, all the better. Looking at how the pitching staff is maturing, Lamb didn't seem to have a slot that he could easily earn. I can't say for sure, but i wonder if he was really happy in Cincy-land.
