Joe Morgan. Defense matters and Carew wasn't good at it.

Joe Morgan was average to above average without the Big Red Machine line up hitting around him. Outside of 1972-1977, he was a fast guy with a small strike zone. Don't get me wrong, he deserves his HoF nod, but it isn't like he was tearing the cover off the ball playing for the Astros (.261/.374/.393/.767 in 10 years). And while Carew didn't have good numbers in the post season in his few opportunities - Morgan was god awful.

Top of my head - though if I took some time to really research it - it could change.

He wasn't great but he was still a plus not a pretty big minus like Carew. Which explains the 20 win difference in career WAR.

Yawn...

Morgan was a very good player for about 6 years the other 15 years of his career he was average at best.

Rod Carew was a great hitter for 16 years.

I'll take Carew and again I am a homer and he is my favorite player of all time but IMO it's not even close...

Interesting numbers (to me):

Joe Morgan played with players who finished in the top 10 in MVP voting 19 times (in a total of 11 seasons), while he himself finished in the top 10 5 times. He did not play with any from 1963 through 1971, while having at least 1 top 10 MVP teamate every year from '72 through '80 (and then again in '82 & '83). Morgan never made the top 10 in any season that he didn't have at least 1 other teammate also in the top 10. Morgan received at least 1 MVP vote in 6 seasons.

Rod Carew played with players who finished in the top 10 in MVP voting 12 times (in a total of 8 seasons), while he himself finished in the top 10 6 times. Carew's longest drought of top 10 MVP candidates happened between 1972 and 1975 (4 seasons) and his longest streak of having top 10 teammates was 3 years (1969-1971). Carew made the top 10 4 times when there was no other teammate in the top 10 (1973, 1974, 1975 & 1977) including his MVP year (1977). Carew received at least 1 MVP vote in 9 seasons.

Well if the question was who is the better leadoff hitter I would take Morgan ALL day and it isnt close. Overall as a player they are really close. Having the ability to draw a ton of walks and swipe bases like Morgan does is a HUGE advantage but Carew was easily a better hit. Morgan had pretty good power for a leadoff guy too.

Not to mention Morgan was a damn good defensive player

isn't it though?? If you compare 2 players with similar skills and those skills translate to a specific lineup spot, then don't you have to emphasize the numbers needed for that specific lineup spot??

Yeah that is a good point. I said I would take Carew by a hair but considering everything and factoring in they both hit leadoff, I would take Morgan

Only problem with that is Carew wasn't a leadoff hitter.

Yeah, even though that wasn't the question to begin with.

That's why I said in my original post, "if the question was who was the better leadoff hitter..."

But I think overall it is really close. I dont have either in my top 3 2B of all-time
