That would be excellent news going into free agency. It will make the 49ers a much more desirable landing spot for free agents. I'm looking forward to improvement next year.

If we were him, why go to another offensive scheme anyway? He's knows he'll excel right here, so why chase a little bit more money? He already knows he's comfortable in the locker room, and no reason this team can't keep improving.

I'd think his "legacy" is a big factor for him to, being he's been on the bench prior? He can "catch up" right now knowing he can get 300 yards a game.

We fans are ok drafting O-linemen high up, if that is how we go. No doubt we have to reduce hits on Jimmy G, and "protecting" him includes a better run game.

I agree no need to drag it out and force a franchise tag, just get a deal done.

Ok, done deal! The number is just about what you'd expect over 5 years. Also good to get him signed before other names drive it even higher.

Most of the money is front loaded and about half is guaranteed. Great deal for both team and teammate.

61.2M through 2019
86.4M through 2020
111.9M through 2021
137.5M through 2022

CAP
--The cap hits in the first 3 years are 37, 20, and 26.6. This is a good contract for both parties.
--Sportrac estimated 117M in 2018 cap space, so this leaves us with 80M in cap room
--It's essentially a 2 year deal, since he could be cut before season 3 without any serious cap issues
--The last 2 years of the deal are basically team options
--If he's cut after 2 seasons, we'd save about 12M in space
--If he's cut after 3 seasons, we'd save 21M and change in space
--If he's cut after 4 seasons, we'd save 22.8M in space

I'm a little surprised the details worked out this well.

The great thing is, SF still has some $80+ million to dole out to FA, to resign guys, etc. etc. In a couple of years, given that JG obviously pans out, this contract will be a bargain.

Yep, first see if we can extend our own? If they don't want to, fine.

Next, in free agency we would need to sign a starting level CB. Doesn't need to be the top rated CB, but someone who'll start. We should also sign an OT, again, doesn't need to be the top OT. Other than these two, don't see us going after top free agents.

Not mentioning LEO simply because i don't think Ansah is it?

Lynch sounded like they will be agressive and active in the free agent period...but that they will be smart about it. Obviously another product of the JG contract is that there will be guys who'll want to go to SF and play alongside him.
