Yeah, I don't see Jeanie, Jesse, Joey or Janie agreeing to sell. I think a more likely scenario would be Jeanie and/or some combination of Jeanie, Jesse, Joey and Janie buying out Jim and Johnny.
i just dont think thats realistic unless they got some serious financing.

Ift he Clippers are worth 2 billion 5 years ago what are the Lakers worth? Plus- the kids that are not involved in basketball operations i think would be more willing to sell then even jimmy and johnny would be.

If Jeanie was allowedto go outside the Buss family- no doubt she could acquire financing, but at what cost?

it would be really really interesting actually---damn would i love to be the law firm charged with making it all happen

Johnny is the only one not involved. Jeanie runs the business side, Jesse and Joey are involved in scouting and also the D-Fenders (I believe) and Janie runs the charitable part of the Lakers. Jim is still technically involved in whatever capacity Jeanie reassigned him to.

So, 4 of them would be unlikely to sell and Jim would have to choose between remaining or selling. Johnny would probably sell.

The inside story of the Lakers' family drama

a GREAT read for a. any Laker fan, b. anyone that likes trust law, or c. any NBA fan in general.

Ramona Shelbourne does a great job here.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- It was long past time for Jeanie Buss to head home. Her headache had turned into a full-blown migraine hours ago -- spots in her field of vision; throbbing at the back of her skull; the works.

It was 5 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 24, and she had a few last calls to make before she could turn off the lights, leave the office and close the book on this, one of the most tumultuous weeks in Los Angeles Lakers history.

Earlier that week, with the Lakers headed toward a fourth straight losing season, Jeanie Buss fired Lakers executive vice president of player personnel, her brother Jim Buss, longtime general manager Mitch Kupchak and communications director John Black. At the same time, she promoted Lakers great (and recently hired advisor) Magic Johnson to president of basketball operations.

It was dramatic and decisive -- the type of bold move her father, Hall of Famer Dr. Jerry Buss, was famous for. To the outside world, it seemed like she had finally swung the sword her father had bequeathed to her upon his death in 2013 and given the Lakers a new direction following four years of deep uncertainty.

...

Three weeks before, Buss had installed Magic Johnson, a Lakers legend and one of her oldest friends, as a special adviser -- an act she had hoped would be a wake-up call to everyone in the front office. Now, she found out, he wasn't being integrated or even informed of what Kupchak and Jim Buss were planning.

One day, she found out the team had worked out center Larry Sanders and hadn't bothered to invite Johnson to watch. Then there were the trade calls Johnson had to inquire about; he was never informed of the prospects -- let alone asked his opinion.

So much for working together.

holy shit....

Buss sibling: Brothers trying to bust family trust

Janie Buss, the younger sister of Lakers controlling owner Jeanie Buss, believes that her two older brothers are trying to bust the family trust so they can sell their interest in the franchise, which was recently valued at $3 billion by Forbes magazine.

"They're [Jim and Johnny] trying to bust the trust so they call their [interests]," Janie Buss said in an ESPN.com story from ESPN's Ramona Shelburne posted Wednesday. "And if they sell, that'll leave the rest of us in a minority."

If that Trust is irrevocable then they cant just but they could do something bad enough that the NBA would force a sale. If the Buss brothers are pitiful enough. Jeanie should explore paying the shareholders a large dividend in return to calm them down. Surely the Lakers could afford to give Jim and Johnny the 25 million each they want

Great read my ass. That is a 100% pure fluff piece to bolster Jeanie Buss. I don't expect much though considering its from Ramona Shelburne, who doesn't really break all that much news and also has a history of boosting up her friends via her columns (see her pieces on Ronda Rousey where she spent 1000s of words blowing smoke up Rousey's ass). That entire piece is slanted to show Jeanie as some innocent little flower who is just trying to run her daddy's franchise but her feelings got hurt by her brothers because they are big meanie jerks that have always been big meanie jerks. Please. There's also fallacies littered through the piece.

The biggest is the Phil Jackson piece, which Shelburne tries to show as a big well of pain for Jeanie to garner up sympathy. Big bad Jim and Mitch did Phil dirty!!! Hardly. At the time, Jeanie was not involved in that part of the franchise. She wouldn't be consulted. It was widely reported what Jackson wanted out of the deal; coach of the Lakers, a TON of money, ability to take games off, control over roster decisions (aka Jim and Mitch's jobs), and an ownership stake in the Lakers (which if he married Jeanie as planned, would give them more shares of the franchise than the other Buss kids). LA balked (rightly so). Jim, Mitch, AND Dr. Jerry Buss. They weren't going to give him that much so they moved on to D'Antoni. So it's Jim and Mitch's fault that Phil thought he had the job and was shocked he didn't get it? No. Did they owe him a phone call? Perhaps but as we've seen in NY, Phil is notoriously hard to get a hold of via phone. Who's to say they didn't try? Whatever. That's not relevant all that much. What is, is that situation did not go down as Shelburne portrays. If Jeanie harbors ill will over that, its her own fault because SHE is letting personal feelings conflict with business. It doesn't matter if he's your fiance, it wasn't going to work. Deal with it

Another issue is the Magic Johnson situation. Oh, so you're shocked Jim/Mitch wouldn't work with a guy that is A) viewed as gunning for their job B) probably being groomed as their replacement and C) A week after getting the advisor job is publicly making comments on how he wants their job. WOW. Talk about insubordination from those scummy guys, Jim and Mitch.

And what about the portrayal here that Jeanie was not informed of decisions over the years? That's also misleading. If you remember, when Dr. Buss died, Jeanie herself said she would leave the basketball stuff to Jim/Mitch, she wouldn't meddle but would step in if need be. So if that's true, why would they need to clue her in on all the basketball dealings? It can't be both ways.

I also like the implication that Demarcus Cousins would have been a Laker if Jim/Mitch wouldn't have botched it and Magic could have made it work. Like that's a good thing? Jim/Mitch were smart to not include Ingram in a deal. Cousins is a headcase. That deal would have gut a big chunk of the team for a headcase with little avenues to get better (which means Boogie will be even more ornery). See, that's more fluff.

Look, Jim and Mitch's time was up. It was probably time to move on. But you're a sucker if you believe this piece as truth. I've said it before, when it comes to the Buss children and this control situation, there are no innocents here. They all have dirt on their hands and its all a big mess

Agree. There was always more to the Phil thing than just Jim and Mitch. In fact, it was ultimately Dr. Buss himself who made the decision to go with D'Antoni over Phil. Dr. Buss wanted a return to the Showtime style of play, which is pretty much what the whole league was moving towards (and is playing like now) and D'Antoni's system was as close as it gets. Combine that with what Phil was asking for and it made moving on from Phil a no brainer, imo.

I kind of disagree here. Yes, Magic had been critical and yes he was likely being groomed as a replacement for one or both. However, if you are trying to keep your job and someone is hired as an adviser on all aspects, then the smart move is to keep that person in the loop. Had that happened, they may still have their jobs as Magic could have said "Hey, Jim's 3 year timeline was off, but they're moving in the right direction."

I disagree here. As the Governor of the Lakers and as the person running the business side, Jeanie should have been kept in the loop because the business side controls the money. Dr. Buss never really involved himself in the basketball side until things got to what a player would be paid. He always had to be clued in because he had the final say on how much they were going to pay a particular player. Jeanie should have been kept in the loop for the same reason Dr. Buss was.

Agree that Jim and Mitch were smart not to include Ingram in a trade for Boogie. They were definitely a lot smarter rejecting that trade than in signing Mozgov and Deng.

Look, Jim and Mitch's time was up. It was probably time to move on.

Ultimately, however it happened, it was time for them both to move on. Mitch's "old school" deliberate approach to negotiations just isn't how things are done anymore and Jim's a dumbass.

Imagine typing them. lol
I read the story on that - Jerry Buss decided to name all of his kids with names that started with the letter J - He thought it would save money on monogrammed towels and stuff and no one could whine about which belonged to towel. Talk about being obsessed - lol

In another story, Magic started out as stated - as a consultant, but Mitch Kupchak and Jim Buss had several meetings which did not include Magic. Magic got shut out of the meeting with Sacramento to discuss trading for Cousins, and then a couple of other small transitions. In addition they refused to keep Jeanie in the loop with these decisions, so Jeanie was fed up and fired both of them.

Scene from an Awkward Christmas Dinner at Buss Family Household
  • Jim: Jeanie, can you ask Phil to pass the salt?
  • Jeanie: Phil, can you pass the salt?
  • Jim: Thank you, Jeanie.
  • Phil: Are you sure you want the salt?
  • Jim: Yes, I would like the salt.
  • Phil: Let me think about it.
  • Jim: Take your time.
  • Phil: Okay, you can have the salt.
  • Jim: You know what. I take that back. I would like the pepper.

Jim Buss officially gone. Raiders officially to Vegas. In the words of Ice Cube, "I got to say, today was a good day."

Now that the FO drama is over, maybe they can get a top FA?

Of course, Jim did fuck up the cap for them so we can all be reminded of his legacy for a couple more years.
