Is it time to consider using asterisks as old records fall?

Is it time to now consider use of asterisks as passing records fall?

Even though the pre-season is young, the experiment enforcing more penalties against DB's has increased. This means once accepted and adhered to many opportunities for offenses to take advantage will present themselves and as a result passing/ receiving records could be in jeopardy. I think that the use of an asterisk is called for to make the distinction between one era and another.

I think most of the old records are already gone or will be soon with or without this expected change, but it is going to be very interesting how this plays out. It is supposed to be enforced both ways, but we all know the defense is going to bear the brunt of this. I already wait for a flag before reacting to most incomplete passes in traffic because of all the flags (and worse, late flags) that are thrown. Now it's going to be worse.

If they increase the regular season to 18 games then it might, unless they end up with a system where individual players can only play 16 of them or something.

I voted yes but realized the record books should just be separate, todays game is not football. They should rename it QBP. Short for Quarter Back Practice.

Rather than a true asterisk I'd rather see something like what baseball has, which is just an understanding/idea of "live ball" records.

Call it a "screwed Defense" era we are in now.

Steroids have been used since the 60s in the NFL, if anything it is a more even field these days because every body is using rather than a handful.

Apparently anything went back then.

"It was like the wild, wild West," guard Walt Sweeney says. "Everything went. There was speed, painkillers, steroids. And if there was a guy around like Terrell Owens at that time, someone would have kicked his ass all over the field."

Football's first steroids team: the 1963 San Diego Chargers - ESPN

The steroid dosage was considerably less though. 15mg a day of dianabol is far less than a responsible 1st time steroid cycle today. I can only imagine the stacks they are on today.

hahaha I have very little problem with PEDs in pro sports other than it means that kids in college, high school and maybe younger are using them. Pros are getting paid and have professional help, the younger the kids the less likely they have adequate supervision.

I do think PEDs can be directly related to the issues with concussion issues though.

Sorry for derailment.

Exactly. I'm trying to imagine Dan Marino in today's game, throwing to guys like Megatron and Brandon Marshall

No asterisk.

MLB players are and always have been defined by the numbers they produce...it's a stats driven game.

The NFL has some key numbers also, but players aren't really defined by them...Jim Brown barely eclipsed 9000 yds, but many still regard him as the standard for RBs...at the same time, the guy that holds the all time record for rushing wouldn't make the top 5 for a lot of us.

Marino & Fouts...yeah, if you never saw them play, the numbers matter a great deal because they never won a SB, but they're in the HOF because the people that did see him play know they were two of the most daring, most accurate passers to ever play and they put the ball in the endzone, not just a lot of yds in between the 20s..

Yes...the new rules have made 4000 yds passing the norm and while 5000 is still considered elite, that's not what defines those players that have achieved it. When you think of Brees and Brady you don't immediately think of their 5000 yd seasons.

IMO...records in the NFL are not THAT big of a deal.

with DB's not able to get within 2 yards or risk a foul being called.

I think this is how it'll happen. I wonder if people will overrate Adrian Peterson because he ran well in a 'passing' era.

No. But I go pretty far back. I began following pro football in the mid/late 60s. They've already changed so many rules so many times that you haven't been able to compare across eras for a very long time. Why start with the asterisks now ?

No. Football isn't baseball, where records are revered as a Holy Grail.
