Save the date: All signs point to 2023 for conference realignment

Some good points raised here. I don't believe however that the ACC will be quiet. They weren't quiet for the last 3 major realignments. I think Cincinnati and UConn will probably get in to allow geographic football divisions which the other power 5 conferences that have divisions utilize (there would be 8 schools north of NC and 8 schools south of VA if those 2 were to be added).

I read this article last year. I'm not sure anyone outside the Big 12 will feel the need to expand by then.

Good grief Cal lost 21 million in 2016.

14 teams in a conference is the max capacity in my opinion because to add more would createscheduling issues. The Big 12 will need to expand because they are way to heavily saturated with Texas teams and it would make sense for the PAC to grab 2 teams in another time zone.

I'm still not convinced that the Big 12 won't have defections. If the PAC were to successfully recruit Texas or Oklahoma the conference is done.

The Oklahoma schools may not want to go to the PAC too many issues with games starting late on the West Coast.

I think the SEC is a more likely option.

The Big 12 could add 6 American schools - Houston, SMU, the Florida schools, Memphis and Temple - and western mid-major powers Boise and BYU so that they could have a true national footprint.

There is no issue with late games in the Pac. The #1 reason that the PAC would want Texas/OU is to get those afternoon slots.

14 makes no sense. The perfect number can not include uneven schedules. I continue to think the number will grow and conferences will petition the NCAA for a 4 team playoff, because money

You know that would be workable and you could increase the playoff teams, defacto.

If the Power 5 reduced itself by 1 school, down to 64. (Not sure who would drop down).

Then you could have 4 16-team leagues. 2 divisions of 8 teams each.

Have a bye week between the last reg season game and the CCG.

The CCG's would be the first 4 games of the playoffs.

Then you would have the 4 conf champs play it off.

The Pac 12 won't expand, they have no leadership and the 4 California schools have all the power but have nothing in common of goals. The Pac12 Network was already a flop when they got OU and Okie State ready which would have led to the White Whale in Texas but the Nerd schools said no. Besides by then Cal will probably have dropped all their athletic programs.

If the PAC12 expanded, I could see them with Colo St and BYU. I don't know about the academics
at CSU or BYU not playing on Sunday's, but that would preserve their two natural rivals league.

Wash-Wash St
Oregon-Oreg St
Ariz=Ariz St
Cal-Stanford
UCLA-USC

They could pair off Utah and Colorado with their natural rivals

16, 18, or 20 works in that scenario. Big 12 is swallowed up. I would love 20. That would mean 9 conference games and cut down on the fluff. A 4 team conference playoff would make the selection committee useless. Each conference has a mini-playoff and the winners play in NC playoff. I would hope that would also encourage OOC scheduling. Early losses would not be as significant in that system. Win your conference and you are in.

I think this is basically the inevitable conclusion to conference realignment.

The b12 gets raided one last time and folds (basically if they lose Texas and OU, plus one other texas school and Ok St you might as well turn the lights out).

I hope uconn gets picked in this scenario, but it's entirely possible they're stuck with what is basically Conference USA and the B12 leftovers.

But that would not allow Alabama to get in if they did not win the conference. We can't have that.

Bama was a rough case this year. I thought by the time playoffs would roll around that they would be a top 4 team. They were banged up during the season. If the playoffs were 1 or 2 weeks after the season, I would have had Bama out.

interesting how much defending their was for OSU when a clearly better Bama team got riddled with hate.

It's college football tradition.
