The Washington Redskins head into the bye week with three starters currently dealing with injuries.

On his conference call Tuesday afternoon following Washington’s Week 4 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said that cornerback Josh Norman (rib fracture) will be week-to-week, running back Rob Kelley (ankle) will be day-to-day and tackle Trent Williams (knee) will have an MRI.

All three players suffered their injuries in Monday night’s game.

In the second quarter of the 29-20 loss at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Mo., Norman landed on Chiefs wide receiver Chris Conley’s heel before being sidelined. The cornerback was checked on by the training staff before entering the locker room just before halftime and not returning.

He was ruled out for the entire second half.

“I came in and got X-rays and saw one of my ribs had something done to it,” Norman said after the game. “I wanted to come back out, but the team specialist thought it was best if I stay out. I said I was, but it’s a long season, but we just want to be cautious.”

Depending on how long Norman’s injury impact’s his health status, the Redskins may have to look to some of their younger cornerbacks in Quinton Dunbar, Fabian Moreau and Joshua Holsey in place of the six-year veteran.

Washington doesn’t return to game action until Oct. 15, though, so the bye came at a good time for Norman’s recovery.

“We’re going to go back and lick our wounds, come back out here in a week and try to get a ‘W,’” Norman said. “We came out here for it, so it’s just very disappointing that I wasn’t able to be there with my teammates when they needed me the most. Like I said, I’m pretty upset right now. Human, mortal body, and you try to go out there and think you’re more than that and sometimes it sits you down.”

Kelley suffered his injury in the second quarter as well, as the running back managed just 23 rushing yards on seven carries before being removed from the game. The second-year Tulane back had been dealing with a rib injury that kept him out of Washington’s Week 3 victory over the Oakland Raiders.

If Kelley once again can’t play in two weeks against the San Francisco 49ers, the Redskins will look to the combination of Samaje Perine, Chris Thompson and Mack Brown.

Perine tallied 27 yards on six carries against the Chiefs and while he did have a costly fourth quarter play in which he failed to secure a toss from Kirk Cousins, Gruden is confident that the fourth-round pick can be a playmaker for this offense.

"I think he’s still in the process of developing, like all young running backs are," Gruden said. "The kid for Kansas City is a special guy – [Kareem] Hunt – but Perine is in a spot right now where he’s just continuing to get the workload, especially if Rob Kelley has got an ankle injury for any due time. He’s going to get more and more reps and he’s going to get better and better.”

As for Williams’ knee cap injury, he’ll undergo an MRI to determine the severity. The Pro Bowl tackle was sidelined for four offensive snaps against Kansas City.

"He irritated his kneecap and we’re just getting an MRI," Gruden said. "He did it in training camp a little bit and it kind of aggravated a little bit so we’ll get an MRI and go from there. Get the proper treatment, get him ready.”

Third-year tackle T.J. Clemmings saw his first action with the Redskins in his place. Clemmings was active for the first time this season with Ty Nsekhe currently out for a few weeks following surgery on a core muscle injury.

In front of him and just to his right, T.J. Clemmings had Washington Redskins offensive line coach Bill Callahan supervising his one-on-one drills. Standing behind and few paces to his left was Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams, whom Clemmings had asked to provide a second set of eyes, as well as pointers on technique, as the Redskins got back to work with a rare Monday practice following their Week 5 bye.

Williams was among several notable starters looking on after a weeklong hiatus from football, his injured knee still too sore to take part in practice. Others were absent, such as cornerback Josh Norman, who’s expected to miss as much as four weeks after fracturing a rib in the Oct. 2 loss at Kansas City, and linebacker Zach Brown, battling an illness.

Monday was a day for shaking off the rust and getting some extra work for backups who may be called on Sunday, when the Redskins (2-2) host the San Francisco 49ers (0-5) at FedEx Field.

“I’m trying to be like a sponge, man,” explained the 6-foot-5, 309-pound Clemmings, who would take over the all-important left tackle position if Williams can’t play or is limited Sunday. Ty Nsekhe, who ably filled in during Williams’s four-game suspension last season, remains sidelined after undergoing surgery on a core muscle in September.

[No mandate for Redskins players to stand for anthem, multiple sources say]

“I’m getting coaching from one of the, if not the best, offensive line coaches in the league,” Clemmings said, referring to Callahan. “And [Williams is] the best left tackle in the league. To get knowledge and even some form of coaching from him, you’ve got to take it.”

Coach Jay Gruden didn’t issue a formal injury report Monday but will do so on Wednesday, when work begins in earnest on the 49ers, who have lost their last four games by three points or fewer.

Norman had a follow-up appointment with doctors Monday, Gruden said, adding that he hoped the cornerback would be able to return in the two-to-four weeks window initially projected but acknowledged it could be five.

Second-year wide receiver Josh Doctson, who fell hard on his right shoulder trying to catch a potential game-winning touchdown pass that instead dribbled from his hands with less than one minute remaining at Kansas City, was healthy enough to practice Monday. Though Docston continues to get treatment on his shoulder, Gruden said he thought he’d be okay for Sunday’s game.

[NFL investigating after Terrelle Pryor says he was called the n-word in Kansas City]

As for Williams, Gruden said he’d know more on Wednesday. An MRI reportedly revealed no structural damage, indicating Williams would be fine to resume playing. And he put in a full day as an assistant coach Monday, conferring with Clemmings after each practice rep.

“Trent was just reminding me of little things that Coach Callahan has taught me but sometimes you steer away from,” said Clemmings, 25, who played his first two NFL seasons in Minnesota. “It was mostly about hands — ‘Try this with your left hand.’ Things most people don’t watch but that make a big difference in your game.”

Elsewhere in the team’s indoor bubble Monday, backups Stefan McClureand Josh Harvey-Clemons got extra work at safety and linebacker, respectively, given the injuries piling up at their positions.

For that reason, the bye was well timed, several players said.

“I feel like I was able to get some rest, get some treatment,” said wide receiver Jamison Crowder, who has been battling a hamstring strain, “so it helped in that area and helped me to get refocused to come back in here this week with a new mindset.”

Tight end Niles Paul called it perfect, even though it meant an uninterrupted 12-week slog to the end of the regular season, given the grueling nature of the first four games.

[Redskins embrace their bye, sensing they can do something special]

“Obviously, this group is a bunch of fighters,” said Paul, the Redskins’ special-teams captain. “After those games, we had moments where we were just looking at each other defeated at the end of the game. Every game — win or loss — we left it all out there. It takes a toll on the body.”

Said Gruden: “We have to just adjust our schedules and really all commit ourselves to the grind of the NFL season 12 weeks in a row. Hopefully 13, hopefully 14, 15 weeks in a row.”

After their ragged performance in a Week 1 loss to Philadelphia, the Redskins have shown progress on both sides of the ball. While the passing game continues to evolve, the running game has helped carry the load. And the defense had made great strides from last year on third downs and quarterback pressures, ranking eighth in the NFL in yards allowed per game.

The 29-20 loss at Kansas City left the Redskins 2-2 at the bye, and they got back to work after what was a tumultuous 24 hours in the NFC East.

As the Redskins idled Sunday, division rival Philadelphia improved to 4-1 with a 34-7 throttling of Arizona. Dallas fell to 2-3 after being edged by the late-game heroics of Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers. And the New York Giants’ prospects for righting their winless season took a bleak turn in a 27-22 loss to the Chargers, in which wide receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Dwayne Harris were lost for the year with a broken ankle and foot, respectively. That leaves the Redskins second in the division standings.

Redskins K Dustin Hopkins is dealing with a hip issue, and the team will work out kickers this week.

Hopkins sounds day to day, but in legitimate danger of missing Week 7. He's been the No. 12 fantasy kicker by average points through the season's first six weeks.

MOses had a fracture, Allen has a sprain.

Fracture... broken bone

Sprain... stressed tendon.

BUt if he doesnt rest it, odds are he would progress it to a fracture trying to compensate for the strain.

IM hoping LAnier can show up enough that we dont have to rush Allen back. Tomsula is going to have to earn his paycheck even more at this point.

I think they are playing about the same, and Ion is showing them both up to a degree.
