If he stays healthy, I'm thinking this will be Isner's best year on clay, really.

He's returning better, and he actually likes a slower surface with a higher bounce.

But yeah, he's struggled over there more often than not.

Isner's return improves every month, it seems.

Nice to see him healthy again for the first time in awhile.

It's just so hard to imagine him doing a whole lot better given his lack of movement. He's one of the big guys who has really maximized his talents on the pro circuit.

Its not hard to see why the tall dudes are returning so much better, they have a large wingspan (6'5" and above) so they don't need a one handed bh for extra reach. Also being so large the racquet is relatively smaller in their hands and they can maneuver better and generate a bigger swingweight (momentum) with their backswing (esp on the bh shots). Nowadays with modern racquets and strings its been super easy for guys like Karlovic and Isner and the Andersons to do well even being this tall whereas back in the 90s and 80s it was unthinkable. Goran and Richard Krajicek(from the 90s) did well to maximise their potential to win a Wimbledon each.

They also have the advantage to handle bouncy-spinny balls that only get to their waist from players like Nadal, so they can hit flat and hard in response and not resort to a helpless counter topspin.

Yeah, HS, for sure. Nadal's shots actually set up very well for a guy like Isner. Rafa's movement and passing shots make up for it, though.

I would love to see Isner take out Nadal at the FO with the above mentioned advantages (like Soderling did), but clay court is a different animal, and mental and stamina play a big role.

I really hope you're right. You know what's funny about Isner? He performs well on American soil except for at the US Open. This guys always manages to get eliminated before the 2nd week. If Isner can get to the round of 16 in Paris & Wimbledon then to the QF at the US Open, this would be a great season for him.

It would be nice to finally see an American men be productive. If Marty Fish didn't have his heart issues, I'm convinced he would be the top American and would actually make runs to the 2nd week at a number of majors

Really surprised at the lack of a spirited challenge from Dog. Fed was sharp though but Dog certainly helped. Bring on second tallest dude vs Djoker.
