I just went to Jim's. Was looking to start a 12 hour drive, and they told me going downtown and then the line that would have been at either place, and then getting back out of downtown would have added an easy 2 hours. Plus they all seemed to agree that Jim's was at least as good, if not better. And there was a place in a strip mall right down the block from where I bought the car.

You did the right thing.

There's at least five places I would go to before Pat's or Geno's, including Jim's. And that's not counting the places that other people have about that I haven't been to, like Campo's or Chink's.

Jim's is better than both by far.

But there are at least 100 places in the area that will do it even better.

I was there in February. I went to Geno’s. I have to go back for 2 weeks in June. I’ll try one of the others.

Geno's and Pat's, as mentioned, aren't the best. They've just had good marketing thanks to Food Network shows choosing them for simplicity (directly across the street). While I'm sure they've got a good local following, I imagine quite a bit of their customers are due to the TV exposure.

The best cheesesteaks, and typically other food items, are found in small shops adjacent to other small businesses (nail salons/etc). You'll never see them on TV with the glitz and glam, but damn they're good and don't have the tourist trap lines and prices.
