That's a fatty! Plenty of meat on that bad boy
Yea she was. She weighed in at 9lbs, but she was full of roe so I turned her back. I can't make myself keep fish that are full of roe unless it's shad or crappie.

Well, went out finally this Saturday and after over an hour of fishing without a single bite I caught possibly my personal best bass for my first fish this year:

I only wish I had gotten a shot from the side to show the width of this thing. It's a little hard to see but I'm not really holding it out much from my body, it was very literally from my belly to knees long. Unfortunately I didn't have a scale or tape measure but I had issues holding it up and out with one hand without it jumping out of my hands. My guess is 8 lbs. but no matter what it was just massive. Bent my medium weight pole right in half and bent a treble hook. Two casts later I caught one just a couple inches smaller, but still a monster.

BTW -- if you don't have one of these lures in your box, you should get one:
Bass Pro Shops XTS Lures - Minnow | Bass Pro Shops: The Best Hunting, Fishing, Camping & Outdoor Gear

They're a little cheap -- the hooks especially -- but they have the best action of any stick bait in my arsenal. They're on sale for less than $2 right now and you can buy four of these for one Rapala, so the cheapness doesn't bother me. That's what I caught the monster above on.

The tail flips back and fourth in a wide swath and has a rattle in it.

I have a few of those XTS baits, but none in that baby bass pattern. Looks like I'll be ordering a few.

Man, there's a local bait shop that is going out of business. My son and I went there today to check out the deals. Everything is 75% off, and the shelves are stocked with ice fishing gear. If my daughter weren't getting married next weekend (thereby fucking up my pocket money budget) I coulda spent a couple of hundred bucks and cleaned house.

Well, Amazon got more of my money today. Just bought a couple Acme Kastmaster spoons to play around with. Not something I've ever really tried, but a couple people use them on some fishing Youtube channels that I watch and they clean up pretty well. Hoping I can catch some Walleye in deep water with them come early June when I go on my annual fishing trip up north (which I'm looking forward to like crazy). Nothing like drinking some beer, fishing and sitting around fires all day instead of working. Last year I had one of the best meals of my life when we had some leftover deer tenderloin roasted over the fire with some fresh Walleye we caught.

Took one of my students out fly fishing last evening. The kid's been trying to hook a trout for weeks. He didn't hook one but he learned a lot about rigging and fishing the seams between the current and slack water. He also watched me land this beautiful football brown. It was around 16 or 17 inches and fat. You can see the water was high and running deep. Took a bit of a tussle and patience to net him on 5x. I caught one other trout and a couple of small smallies.

Just got back. The fishing was pretty slow over the weekend. We spent a lot of time casting and trolling and didn't get much -- but we did get enough to eat and one little Rainbow surprise (which I've never seen anyone catch in a lake like this). Here's a nice pick I took of some just simple fantastic shoreline:

Got a nice Walleye the first night:

Got another identical Walleye the next afternoon with a rainbow trout. It hit a trolling line in about 40 feet of water? We kept it because we snagged a gill:

Then we took them all and grilled them over the fire:
