Y’all are missing the point and the celebrity angle. Who doesn’t want to see Chucky’s crazy face gestures again on the sidelines? It’s all about the entertainment value.

OK, reading every page of this thread is cutting into time so I only read a few and I apologize if someone else brought this up. Anyhow, what does Oakland have any relevance to a ten year contract? :noidea:
They are going to Vegas.

If Billacheat, Peyton, abd Tomlin were all FA cvoaches they'd be getting more than 10 mill a annually.

And for the haters that think the game has passed him by.....

1-He was still in the football business as an analyst and watched a ton of game film, not to mention the games.

2-He helped assemble McVey's staff. They did pretty well I'd say this season.

3-He's not going to a rebuilding team. The Raiders went 12-4 last season and have a key piece in Carr at QB as well as a solid OL that had a down year.

For what its worth, Dick Vermeil was out of coaching for what almost 20 years?

Joe Gibbs. They didn't win a SB but he certainly helped them in the short term.

I think Gruden does better.

There are only three head coaches in the NFL that have tenured 10+ years:
  • Bill Belichick (deserves it; one of the greatest coaches in pro sports history)
  • Marvin Lewis (owner is inexplicably loyal)
  • Mike McCarthy (courtesy of quarterback greatness)
The Raiders do not have a first-ballot HOF QB. The Raiders to not have an inexplicably loyal owner. So that leaves being one of the greatest coaches in pro sports history as the only way he makes a 10-year deal worth the money. I give better odds on the Return of the Christ within the next 10 years than Gruden fulfilling that contract.

But, Gruden believes he can turn Carr into a HOF QB....and the main piece (according to people on here that you need to be successful) to lead a team.

@DirtDirtDirt, since you're a NYC guy, you probably witnessed first-hand how the Knicks-Phil Jackson saga went down - you probably know better than I do... Phil was happily retired, but the Knicks came calling with a truck full of money that he would've been a fool to decline. Phil ran that franchise into the ground essentially because he was in it for the money.

Doesn't this seem eerily similar to you?

Phil had never been the GM.....

Gruden isn't......he was hired to coach.

Yeah...and count me out of the 'Tony Dungy built Gruden's Bucs.' If that's the case, might as well say Jim Mora built Dungy's SB Colts team....both are equally stupid.

Fact is, most of the core guys are already on TB before TG gets there, especially on defense.

Great point.

Pete Carroll also did well after returning to the League after a long absence.

I love it

Everyone just automatically assumes he will suck, seems the "IN" thing to do

Not me, think he will be great

"Great" is strong based on his track record.

I'm not expecting a SB title next yr, or the yr after, or the year after, or the yr after, but I think he will do okay...the Raiders will probably be a top 10 or thereabouts OFC in his 2nd yr, but he's never been a big DEF guy so we'll have to see what kind of DC (Fisher?) he pulls in.

He said Frankenstein. Young Frankenstein was his fav movie as a kid and Chucky was his 2nd

Who gives a shit if it's a 10 year deal? I doubt either side has any intention of him being their HC 10 years. As long as he can get them into the playoffs consistently and maybe win a Super Bowl, it's money well spent.

and if you suck at hiring head coaches, might as well go back to the well with one of your most successful ones

Balls.

I bet you like Barry Switzer too.
I do but that's because he's hilarious, not his Jimmy Johnson coattails.

But you are way off with that comparison. Gruden beat the team he built in Oakland.
