Edwards believes he has the ability to succeed at ASU despite whispers that he was a poor hiring: "I love the game of football too much, and I owe the game of football too much for me to take a job that I thought I was ill-equipped to handle. I'm well-equipped to handle this by all stretches of the imagination."

Edwards has never previously been a head coach at the collegiate level, but he says he loves the dynamic: "I wake up going, 'I'm in my element.' Every time I come in here, I realize how much I missed it. [College players are] clay. They're hopeful. They have energy, they have aspirations."

The 63-year-old Edwards last coached in 2008 when he was the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs.

I don't like the hiring, but it will sure be an interesting ride. Potential happenings with Sumlin or Leach.

I still don't get that hire. The powers that be at ASU must see something others don't.

They are idiots who don't give a real damn about ever really being something in Football or Basketball

The AD is tight friends with Edwards but with that said the boosters should have put their foot down. They have the final vote seeing how they pay the bills in the PAC ... it's poor conference anymore with no decent TV contracts.

Howard says hold my drink.

Everything I know about alcoholism I learned from Schnelly. I mean seriously the Blake hire was too much too soon but that might have had a chance if it happened a decade later after he had a chance to develop as a coach. Howard was a fall down drunk. How he had the career he did is beyond me

The idiot AD made no bones about the fact that this hire would go to a diversity candidate. Since he was dead set on taking a position like that at least he could have hired Sumlin who was available at the time. Instead he chose his good friend and former client dating back to the stone ages when he was Edward’s agent when he was in the NFL. Immediately after the hire Edwards tried to retain the OC and DC and both of them saw the writing on the wall and told him to pound sand. As an alumni and season ticket holder this pisses me off. It’s going to be a complete and utter disaster.

This isn't hyperbole.

This is the most confused I've ever been at a hiring (in any sport) during my lifetime.

To play Devil's Advocate to those who don't like the hire:

Herm Edwards is a well known guy who is extremely charismatic. Given his NFL experience and his extensive time being an NFL analyst for ESPN, he will likely be able to recruit extremely well. I think he's a guy who could make a solid college coach given his personality. X's and O's are a completely different dynamic though.

I personally don't like the hire, but I do think he could bring in a lot of talent just given his personality and background.
