Has there ever been a cover version that completely changed your opinion of a song?

and the Somewhere Over The Rainbow reboot by the Hawaiian singer that's basically become the definitive version.

Also several early Led Zeppelin tunes... though it would have been nice if they'd given the original writers credit.

Obviously Jimi Hendrix covering Bob Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" gives the song & story a completely different and more likable feel.
I still have the 10th Anniversary issue of Rolling Stone that said "Hendrix's 'All Along the Watchtower' was the best damn Bob Dylan ever recorded."

Pretty sure even Dylan adopted Hendrix's version after he died. I know I've read somewhere that he's always found it strangely unique that when he plays it, he feels like he's paying tribute to Hendrix.

Good to cya btw

Didn't care for the original until I heard NOFX's cover.

Was listening to NPR yesterday, they had a show about covers and why people perform and like them. I can't find the link, but Watchtower was one of the most respected.

I think Manfred Mann's cover of "Blinded BY The Light" (Springsteen) also transformed the song into something semi-psychedelic and cool.

There are several that folks do not realize are covers. Here are two originals and covers:

There have been numerous notable cover versions (Willie Nelson's to name 1) of this Irving Berlin classic....but AJ and his band takes it to another level, making this powerful jazz rendition one of my all time favorites.

* It was featured in the Glengarry Glen Ross film soundtrack...which also happens to be one of my fave David Mamet screenplays.

I am going with a wordsmith, THE GOAT, and one of his idols:

And the story behind Pete's version:

There are so many Dylan songs that could go in this thread....

But when this came out:

Now I can`t get enough...……..Dave Draiman`s voice is powerfully mind blowing...….Its legendary.

He put a lot of energy in to it...…...

This changed my mind in that I never thought there could be a cover of a Rage song that lives up to the original, or has a unique spin that makes it worth covering until I heard it.

The modern rock cover thing has been pretty cringe-worthy to watch (I'm blaming you Sound of Silence) but I actually really like this cover for its ability to function as a tribute to the original and really pushing home the concept of America perpetually at war.
