For anyone that thinks that Sacto’s Haliburton trade was bad…

Imagine if they had traded him for Ben Simmons instead. (That was the rumored deal for much of 2021.)

While I love what Haliburton has done with the Pacers to this point, I think Sabonis gets an unfair rap by Sam Quinn and others for actually leading a team that has missed the playoffs 16 straight seasons.

Sabonis is a good player.

But Haliburton is so young and good. Guys like that don’t get traded.

This one going to look bad in a few years.

It reminds me of a Wizards trade.

Young Webber for vet Mitch Richmond
Young Rasheed for vet Rod Strickland
Young Rip Hamilton for vet Stackhouse

This one probably won’t age much better.

Not great timing on this thread seeing Sabonis broke his hand a couple days ago.

I maintain the careers of Stack and Rip were just about neck and neck. Detroit just used Rip to perfection while the Wiz used Stack poorly.

Problem was they traded a young pre-prime star for a post prime star.

Whether or not their careers were neck and neck is irrelevant.

The Wizards got little from Stack because he was declining.

Sabonis isn’t declining obviously, but if 2 players are semi-comparable in terms of ability, the team that got the younger, cheaper guy wins the deal in a landslide.

So you saying the Pacers could win a title with Hali?

I find that hard to believe given how often you emphasize finances and marketing ability.

No, I am not saying that. Because that depends on a lot of other things going right for Indiana.

I am saying they won this trade handily.

So take the W and be happy!

Rare win win for both Teams.

Look, the Kings making the playoffs would be a huge win for them.

Not sure what it will look like in a few years.

But, today?

Both teams got what they needed.

The trade could stay balanced moving forward though. Haliburton is excelling on a team with holes, but if Indiana builds properly, his usage will drop. Sabonis isn't exactly old at 26 and in his prime, should be effective for at least another contract cycle if not two.
