He's part of Kelly's Grand Valley St. coaching tree. In other words he's a Brian Kelly company man. I don't think Kelly has the stones to fire him.

I disagree about firing Kelly. Overall he has done a good job. He rebuilt this program. I just think he needs a good DC and all the puzzle pieces will fall.

I didn't say fire him but he deserves blame (a) for retaining him and (b) failing to adjust his system to match his players' talent level and experience.

Need to go back to cover 2 defense. Bend but no break. Sure it is boring but that defense doesn't allow big plays. Name of the game is not letting the team score points. Need a simple game plan.

Here is a good question. When was the last time our Defense won us a game? Like the offense sucked and The D had to carry us. It had to be the 2012 season. Maybe 1 or 2 games since then. Where is Diaco? We need him back.

All I kept thinking was when TX was in the RZ, I wish we had Diaco's defense in there right now with the safeties pinching, because there was no mystery what TX was going to do with Swoopes in there. Crash the safeties of the edge and stop them before they can get started. I even made such a comment in the game day thread.

Safeties sit back and in the middle of the field from 25 to 25 yard line in order to lot let anything go deep. They pinch in the red zone where the offense has less field to work with. VanGorder's defense only works if you can get pressure on the QB and they just can't do it. Don't try to do things you can't!!!! Have a scheme that the players can actually run. Bye VanGorder! Fire him after Nevada moves the ball on big plays

The only other time in recent memory was USC in 2013 when Rees went down and Andrew Hendrix forgot how to throw a football. The defense stepped up big time, despite giving up field position on punt returns. Tuitt was a beast all game, tossing the OL like rag dolls into the QB. The last two drives against USC last year they came up big (Russell's Int and tip to Redfield, and Jaylon's open field tackling). Other than that, none that I can think of.

Quick show of hands. How many people said, "oh shit" when we scored and there was about a minute left for Stanford to try and score last year. I was one of em.

Same people, quick show of hands, how many people said oh shit when Newsome shanked the punt and thought, well, if the defense stops them here, we can run the clock out, if we had defense. Same people, who thought for sure in OT we weren't stopping anyone.
