This just in. Was checking my FB page when I saw a post from Tennis Express. Federer is indeed using a 98 sqin frame. Didn't say which one but stay tuned.... I will find out more. :suds:

Pretty much guarantee it will be modified to suit him. Same with all racquets that top pros use, really.

I really hope it works for him.

As anybody who used to be on ESPN knows, I'm a huge Federer fan. I think it's a stretch for him to contend for slams regularly anymore, but he might sneak another in. We'll see if the racquet change works. :)

This is the official link for Fed's racquet switch

Roger Federer Confirms New Racquet, He?s Gone From 90 To A 98 Head Size

Does it work? Well he just beat Brands in its debut match. I will elaborate on what the switch from 90 to 98 sqin will be soon, but there are pluses and minuses as with any change but I believe the pluses outweigh the minuses as Roger is a very adaptive player.

Wilson has a 98 sqin frame in its line up but they might just open a new line of frames with Federer's signature and a new paint job and call if something new. I am a little surprised he did not go for a 93 or a 95 sqin because the switch from 90 - 98 is a big one. Some serve issues like precision may be compromised but I think if he has his racquet expert make some mods on it like adding weight to the right places to make the sweet spot smaller then he probably will regain the precision. He will def benefit from more power from frame, and a larger area means he will be able to keep more balls in.

His basic game won't change, but it will take a couple of tournaments to adjust to it and come USO HE SHOULD BE READY!

I myself switched to a 93 from a 90 and moved to a shoulder friendly frame and I love the switch.

Here fed discusses the new racquet in a clip.

Federer Makes Winning Start in Hamburg with New Racquet » peRFect Tennis)

The reason he added two 250 events in his calendar is twofold. One to try the new frame and get some match practice with it. Two he is hurting for some ranking points I think. He needs to remain on top five to make an impact in the slam draws. Before now he never really found the time to try a change but he got bounced early from Wimby which was maybe a blessing in disguise and got an extra 10 days. Wish he had done this some years back but better late than never.

Fed hit 9 aces in the match on a clay court so that bodes well on the service issue. Plus he will get more topspin from a larger stringbed. All in all I like the change up. Lets go kick some Nadal booty when they meet next. Nadal only has 2 sqin advantage now.

Hmmm. I've enjoyed using the Wilson nPro Open for like 5 years now. There are two versions of it and I use the one meant for peeps using an extreme western grip...as I do. It has been the perfect racquet for this club player - it works for heavy baseline strokes in clay-court singles matches but has great touch and spin generation for when I'm playing doubles with the old guys.

That said, I suppose it's time to start seeing if some racquets have progressed as I like 'em.

Fed reaches QF beating Hajek 6-4, 6-3; to meet Florian Mayer next which should be a good test for the new frame.

In the Hajek match:
7 aces which is good but only 52% of first serves in meaning he is still transitioning into the frame. On return points won 44% on first serve and higher ( as expected ) on second serves from opponent.

I am expecting A better serve return from Fed with the new frame. Lets get the fine tuning done and all the bugs cleared before USO.

Have you ever tried proKennex frames? I switched from the (k-90, BLX90, and before that WPS 85) to the Redondo Type C 93, and my shoulder immediately started to feel better. I recommend. The feel and precision is just as good as the ProStaff 85.

Fed vs Mayer

Fed won the first set 7-6(4), down a couple of breaks in the second and Mayer is about to close it out. Hopefully we will see a stronger third set from Federer.

He really needed the practice! Watched most of the Florian match, but turned away to catch some news at 5-5 in the 3rd! Still waiting to see who won it; ESPN holding back on the final score! BTW, the German Open is a 500 series event; or so it says on the screen!

Fiero, Federer won 7-5 in the third. Next up is a. Qualifier who is playing pretty good. I expect Fed to get through and meet Fognini or Almargo in the final. So if he winsthe event he is getting 500 pts ?

Fed playing Gstaad. If he wins Hamburg so he gets to 6285 and another 500 win can put him breathing down Nadal's neck. Nadal is at 6860 and doesn't play till Montreal masters. So the race to USO crucial to both guys to see who ends up in top four or even top three because Ferrer is within striking distance ( only 200 pts ahead of Nadal ). I really don't want another slam featuring Ferrer as one of the big four because he is a beat down goat for anyone in semis.
