he pulled a Nadal on Rafa... losing before meeting him and potentially getting destroyed due to tournament fatigue ( too many five setters and DelPo). Well there is the year end championship both should be fresh

Disagree.

They've been 1 round away 6 times.

2008: Nadal loses to Murray in the SF. Would have faced FED in the Finals.

2009: Nadal loses to Del Potro in the SF. Would have faced FED in the Finals.

2010: FED loses to Djokovic in the SF. Would have faced Nadal in the Finals.

2011: FED loses to Djokovic in the SF. Would have faced Nadal in the Finals.

2013: FED loses to Robredo in the 4th round. Would have faced Nadal in the QF.

2017: FED loses to Del Potro in the QF. Would have faced Nadal in the SF.

So FED has lost when 1 round away four times compared to Nadal's two times.

In 2015, Nadal lost in the 3rd round to Fognini.

Nadal DNP in 2012, 2014, 2016.

In 2007, Nadal lost to David Ferrer in the 4th round.

In 2006, Nadal lost to Youzhny in the QF.

In 2005, Nadal lost to James Blake in the 3rd round.

In 2004, Nadal lost to Roddick in the 2nd round.

Looking at the Australian Open history (they faced in 2017, 2014, 2012, 2009):

Nadal lost in the 1st round to Verdasco in 2016.

2015: FED lost in the 3rd round to Seppi. He could have faced Nadal in the SF had both made it. Nadal lost to Berdych in the QF.

Nadal DNP in 2013.

2011: They would have met in the Finals, but FED lost to Djokovic in the SF, and Nadal to Ferrer in the QF.

2010: They would have met in the Finals, but Nadal to Murray in the QF.

2008: They would have met in the Finals, but FED lost to Djokovic in the SF, and Nadal to Tsonga in the SF.

2007: They would have met in the Finals, but Nadal to Fernando Gonzalez in the QF.

2006: Nadal DNP.

2005: They would have met in the Finals, but Nadal to Hewitt in the 4th round.

2004: They would have met in the 4th round, but Nadal lost to Hewitt in the 3rd round.

Wanted to mention that they would have met in the Finals in those years.
