He saw Rafa destroying the competition and wanted no part of that. Can't say I blame him at all

I'm so disappointed. I really like seeing him play at the majors.

I was all for him taking a break after Miami if it meant he'd play the FO.

And I like seeing a player try to win what they have least of. So the AO and FO for FED were more special, because he's struggled more in the past. So each win is more satisfying.

I also do think he's a good clay court player. Maybe not as natural as Djokovic or Nadal, but he's had a lot of success when compared to most players in history.

I also like seeing rallies. So to me, in some ways, clay shows off more of his versatility on how he can win points. He has to do more than serve.

The AO did a good job of that too.

Wawrinka or Murray are who I'm rooting for to win it.

But wish it could have been FED first. Even if he'd have gone against one of those two and lost, it at least would have been an entertaining match.

So playing one clay event was not in the best interest of his tennis.

Does that mean he'll play 2 clay events next year?

I also wanted to see if FED could beat Djokovic or Nadal on clay. Yes, I know it's hard, but that's why they lace them up.

I thought he'd lose the AO to Nadal, but he did it.

What if he could have beaten one of them at the FO? Would have been another cool win.

Also, what if one of them lost early, just like Djokovic and Murray did at the AO? That could have been another chance for FED.

I've had "Federer" on my wishlist on my DVR for over a year.

I still haven't seen a replay of his win against Djokovic at the 2011 FO.

That was a match I was looking forward to watching on my DVR that night in 2011, but the results were spoiled for me.

So then even when I started watching it, I wasn't paying as close attention and I didn't get as into it.

I didn't know that FED would then have such a hard time against Djokovic after that. I didn't know that would be one of the last times he'd beat Djokovic at a major.

I didn't get a chance to appreciate how well he played.

I'm also trying to find a replay of Clijsters-Capriati 2001.

Last year, there were zero replays of past FO matches, except for a Serena "Catch 22" marathon where they replayed all of her 21 GS wins.

This year, my DVR has found a few mens and women's finals from 2011+ that will be replayed, either on ESPN Classic or Tennis Channel, depending on the match.

The problem is that the FED vs. Djokovic was a SF match. They don't seem to be replaying great SF matches. :(

I wish I could fake his registration and make him play.

I'm almost certain we won't see Federer play at RG again for his career even if he plays another 3 or 4 years

all jokes aside, all he cares about is majors, and Wimbledon above all others.

he'd probably go deep at the french, but at the expense of being at his best on grass.

Yeah the only time I can see him playing at RG again is if he knows he is retiring from the start of the year and want to give those fans in Paris one more chance to see him play outside of that I don't see it happening again.

Yeah, I was thinking that too.

There's also a chance he doesn't play the AO either. Maybe he was right during his AO trophy speech that he'd think about his body before committing to even the AO.

I don't want him to skip the AO either.

I know I'm not him, but as I said, winning the ones he has the least of, or going deep in those, is more fun for me, because of how more rare it is. He's done so well at Wimbledon, that doing well at the others, will stand out more for me.

I'm just thinking that the 3 weeks off in between the FO and Wimbledon should be enough.

Plus playing on grass isn't as stressful itself, so even entering Halle should be ok.

I just wanted to see him play at another major, in a best of 5 format, against the best players.

Only long shot I could see, if I take his words literally that one event on clay isn't enough preparation, is that maybe next year he does Rome and the FO.

I'm the same.

Clay is my favorite time of year, but I love it all.

Would love to see him play more on the dirt, but it's just not a priority for him at this point in his career. Totally understandable.

This is the smartest move made by Fed this year. He will have 100% for grass season and won't have to deal with a demoralizing exit at the FO in whichever round that may happen in. After having no warmup on clay one doesn't just show up at the FO and hope they can win there.
