Besides fireworks, unless you create some big show yourself...

I love endulging in potato salad and bbq'ed chicken, while watching the revolutionary war shows on History channel.

This year I'll get two out of three, but I'll also get a private pool. I'll take the inconvenience of the pool. :)

What are yours?

I've always been interested in the Revolution and the events leading up to the rebellion.

Senator Mike Lee has a new book out - "Written out of history." I don't buy many of his political opinions, but this book about important guys in American History - we don't see mentioned much. He hit a few of my favorites: Canasatego - the Iroquois chief who taught Ben Franklin about the separation of powers - which Franklin put into the original confederation constitution - Luther Martin - Mercy Otis Warren - and her brother James Otis (no taxation without representation).

I've always thought the whole spy ring Washington had was interesting, and I love watching the show TURN. But I agree, history is more interesting when you get off the beaten path and start learning about the other characters who made an impact.

I had a high school history teacher who claimed he was in the corner of the square digging for nightcrawlers when the proverbial "Shot heard around the World" was taken. He was one who read a LOT of the "off the beaten path" books and shared a lot of extra info not in the textbook.

And although he was a World history professor, my history teacher in college was an avid reader too, and basically told his class a story every period. Took a subject that can be awfully boring and made it interesting, and even riveting at times.

I use to have a lot of fun with friends on the 4th... Use to go to the town parade, then hang out at my parents house and drink and then go to the fireworks at night. Now it's just kinda whatever happens, happens. Still like it, but with it being on a Tuesday and me workign the day before and day after I am just looking forward to the day off.

I've now lived long enough to see signs of old age in this puppy.

My wife hates backyard fireworks but she relented this year and I'll be lighting off over 500 aerials and 50 or so cones, spinner and ground works. Also have over 100 hand held oversized sparkler that also have tiny aerials.
I picked a couple of 5 foot sparkler swords that shoot sparks and flame about 5 feet. Just spent the past hour or so exposing all of the fuses so I don't have to go searching in the dark.

I might even have a beer tonight.

IT definitely used to mean more as a kid than as an adult. My friends and I would save our money from summer mowing to get the biggest haul of fireworks we could. Now it has morphed into family barbecues and being told by others to "put down those fireworks and set the example for the kids"

But aren't you setting an acceptable example for the kids by setting off your fireworks???:noidea:

Well it is more when you start having a roman candle fight with a 10 year old that some of the adults were not exactly excited.
