Great news, 4 year extension ... he and Cox have been tremendous next to each other.

I like it. We are going to have a dominant defensive line for years to come. All the core players are locked down to long term contracts. I would like to see them re-sign guys like Long and Beau Allen for depth.

I was afraid we'd lose Jernigan in free agency. Dude's been a rock solid addition to this DL and at 25 he's just hitting his prime years. Great trade to snag him in the first place and great job of locking him up before he can bolt in free agency.

My guess though is that this means some guys like Jeffery and maybe Trey Burton are not going to be signed beyond this season.

Another key point: hitting on a rookie QB lets you pay players in other positions. The Carson multiplier effect. We saw this with Seattle and Russell Wilson. They kept the defense largely intact thanks to not having to pay him right away.

We’ll see. Definitely some cap room can be finagled, depends on what their priorities are. I think Alshon will be back.

I agree here. I think he stays.

Might not be able to pay Alhogar though. I can see Burton going elsewhere.

But keeping that line solid is a big priority.

The biggest problem will be if NFL revenues don't increase at the rate that the contract structure projects.

They could cut Celek to re-sign Burton, he and Wentz have good chemistry on and off the field - don't want to mess with that too much. Torrey Smith may not be back given his lack of production.

Vinny Curry could also become a cap casualty to create more space for Jeffery. Plus I wouldn't rule out potential pay-cuts, if they accept, for Kelce and McLeod.

Celek will certainly be gone after this year, I think. So maybe they re-sign Burton with that extra cash.

Smith is dirt cheap so I could see him back for his second year. But I think Mack Hollins is probably taking his job as the outside speed receiver in this offense.

This point right here!

I don't think (or I'm hopeful) that the cap doesn't sag or drop in the next 3-4 years. But I think this sport is set up for such a fall that will effect the cap sometime.

2018 Moves to open Cap Space

Jason Peters - Could retire (would really open up cap space) or June 1st Cut would still open up 8 million in cap space.

Torrey Smith - Cut saves 5 mil

Jason Kelce - restructure would save "around" 2.5 mil

Brent Celek - Cut saves 4 mil

Total Saved: 19.5 Mil Saved (more if Peters retires)

Primary free agents: Nigel Bradham, Patrick Robinson, Alshon Jeffery, Beau Allen, Trey Burton.

Yea, I don't think we are in trouble at all

The bigger issue I see, is keeping Wentz on that rookie contract "IF" we truly go to and win a SB this year.

I love Lane, but he has been majorly overpaid over the years paying RT. The only justification was that he was on Vicks blind side (how long ago was that?) and that he would be moved to LT (clearly not going to happen). So he has been massively over paid for his position. It's time to recoup some money there as well, imho.

Agreed. Hollins is dirt cheap right now. And performing better. Not sure how much savings there is against his cap number, but Smith is not worth his number.

Keeping Wentz on the rookie contract?

Not sure what he means — but Wentz will eventually get extended and paid a huge salary. That’s going to change how much we can spend on other positions. That’s why drafting well is so important.

I believe next year is 100% savings on Smith (aka no dead money).
