You highlighted that they got a 6th back from Indy in the Allen deal but didn't include it in your count. They also have a 5th round comp pick.

I think this off season is setting the tone for the departure of TB12, the Pats went all in on players that can help them win now, secure another ring or two. The loss of early round picks is not as big a hit as the draft is pretty deep on positions of need TE, RB DE.

I think Bill is always preparing for Brady's departure.
Brady says 6-7 more...It will be at least 4.

With Brady I just say this: "Enjoy each day!".

With that said, they should trade Garoppolo only if they have confidence Brisset can be the future. If that's the case then the trade should be a priority given the cost to keep him and the value he can return. If they don't believe in Brisset they need evaluate the value of the team without surety at the QB position vs the value with surety... If the value of surety is less than the combined cost of keeping him and value returned by a trade, then still make the trade.

Life's complicated, but decisions are not impossible.

I am not sure BB and company are ready to accept that, at his age the decline is going to happen and the QB draft class stinks this year. They can tag Jimmy next year and see what the class looks like then.

Why do people think the Pats can simply spend 20+M on a backup QB? A tag is possible, sure, but people throw it out there like its some small issue.

Wonder why people assume others assumes it's a small issue? It's an option not trading him this year and tagging him next gives the Pats two years to decide what they are going to do, if they really feel Jimmy is the heir apparent they will roll the dice on that. I think Butler and Amendola will be gone only other FA they really need consideration for in 2018 is Solder, maybe Edleman but I think they works something there. I think they will have the room to make a move or offer him the highest paid back up contract in the league or an extension.

Now if they feel he is not the answer on are not concerned they deal him this year and recoup some draft picks. This is a very do able situation.

Throwing possibly $20 million at a player is nothing to cast off as nothing but yeah if you believe he is the future of the franchise you make that move 100% of the time. And just looking at Cap Space that can be carried over the Pats will have about $10 million that will carry over from this season. So gives them a little bit of breathing room to make such a deal.

To me if the Pats are really considering trading him teams should take that as big warning signs flashing that he won't be a good as advertised.

JG is costing them practically nothing this year. He will cost at least $23M if he gets tagged next year. At least $25M in 2019 if he's tagged a second time. Just so you outsiders know.......the Patriots are $27M under the cap as we sit here today. We can assume that Belichick will spend a good piece of it on one maybe two or even three new players or resign a couple already on the roster.

There are at least 150 players who are free agents looking to grab a roster spot.....SOMEWHERE. And most will be looking to get one at ANY price. The Patriots spend when it's absolutely necessary. Never just to get a "name" player.

If BB thinks that JG is the Patriots QB of the future, he won't blink eye to pay him. That and the salary cap will be at least $170M next year.

So let me get this straight: If they can have him, they shouldn't want him; If they can't have him they should want him. Since when is filling a roster similar to dating?

Well how often has trading for a QB worked out? Not very often. Brett Favre comes to mind. Usually a team especially with an aging QB like the Pats have want to keep a guy if they think he is a franchise QB for the next 10-15 years. It would take a huge trade to make it worth their time.

I guess I would just proceed with caution if the Pats are openly shopping him.

I assume that because people throw it out like, "we just franchise him and see what happens". You're going to lock up 48M at the QB position to see how it shakes out? If they think he's the future, lock him up for five years. You would hope a genius like Belichick would know after three years if a guy is the future.

And if they do not trade him I suspect they will offer a lucrative extension, part of the business of using the tahe on him, buys the team time.
