Only a year after I planned to do this...

Significant non-Giants drafted...

Stephen Strasburg (1-1)
Mike Leake (1-8)
AJ Pollock (1-17)
Mike Trout (1-25)!!!!
Nolan Arenado (2-10)
Jason Kipnis (2-14)
Kyle Seager (3-2)
Dallas Keuchel (7-20)
Paul Goldschmidt (8-15)
Brian Dozier (8-21)
Matt Carpenter (13-18)

Giants Picks...

1-6 Zack Wheeler MLB debut 6/18/13 NY Mets

Tommy John Surgery. Twice. That is pretty much the long and short of Zack Wheeler's baseball career. When he was traded to the Mets at the deadline in '11, it caused a huge uproar amongst the fringe, but neither team ended up winning that trade.

2-55 Tommy Joseph MLB debut 5/13/16 Philadelphia Phillies

Hunter Pence. As has happened with a LOT of the Giants picks over the last decade or so, ToJo was the centerpiece of a deadline deal that resulted in a ring (or two). Joseph was drafted as a catcher, but fell to concussions and had to move out from behind the dish. He is putting up decent numbers for the Phils, but in that park, he should be doing better. He will likely stick around for a while, but as a journeyman bench-bat, most likely.

5-147 Brandan Belt MLB debut 3/31/11

NL All-Star in 2016

The Girraffe is a solid MLB starting 1B. He offers up GG-level defense and puts up numbers that give stat-geeks wet dreams and traditional stat-followers nightmares. I am not sure there is a more controversial star player in the Giants history for actually doing nothing wrong (AJ nut-punched a dude; Barry used the needle; Sandoval tossed the grenades). Possibly the greatest 5-round pick in Giants history.

12-357 Chris Heston MLB debut 9/13/14

No-Hitter

Pitched a hell of a 3/4 season in '15, hilighted by the no-no in NY, but dude hit the wall at full force. He has been a mess since and has been passed around the league like a working girl at a Diddy party.

In summary, the Giants got a major contributor to 2 championships and 2 major pieces to major trades that ultimately led to 2 championships. Not a GREAT draft, but far from a flop.

Thanks for doing this cal. Were you going to do the WAR comparisons to other teams on this draft (or is that a year or two down the road)?

That will come in a future post. I am trying to keep the same basic format I used for the previous reviews.

I forgot he was called Mike before Giancarlo. Knew it was something different, but I thought it was like Carlos or something.

Funny how many of these guys the Giants ended up with. I remember dreaming of Bum and Alderson dominating on the mound, with Posey and Villalona batting 3/4 mashing through the league. Villalona was supposed to be the next Miggy.... LMFAO!

Don't forget that Tommy Hanson spent some time with the Giants' org as well. In fact, I want to see that was the last org he played with.

Yup. He was in Fresno his last year.

I didn't list him in the Giants portion because he was already listed in the top 10.

Got it. I thought that maybe you had forgotten since you listed Bumgarner twice.
So I did...

Including Bum was the "error" in my intentions, not omitting Hanson.

Anyway, you are correct. Hanson also spent time with us.

As mentioned earlier, not a horrible class. Wheeler and Joseph were both traded at the deadline in major trades (Joseph led to 2 rings, Wheeler not so much) and Belt is a solid MLB starting 1B. A solid top 1/3 class.

The Angels were the true champs of this draft…

1) Angels (124.0)
Trout (85.3)
Corbin (15.4)
Grichuk (11.6)
- very top heavy draft. Almost all their WAR comes from their first 3 picks. But getting an inner-circle HOFer with ANY pick will qualify that class as an elite class
2) Diamondbacks (92.3)
Goldschmidt (60.9)
Pollock (22.7)
3) Rockies (66.3)
Arenado (53.5)
- Is Arenado a HOFer, or does he suffer from the Coors-effect? IMHO, he is a clear HOFer.
4) Astros (63.8)
Martinez (29.1)
Keuchel (19.0)
Hernandez (15.8)
- JD was a 20th rounder, Keuchel was an 7th rounder and Kike was a 6th rounder. They really salvaged this draft with the later rounds.
5) Giants (55.9)
Belt (28.5)
Wheeler (27.0)
- This class doesn’t get much love because of the Beltran trade, but that trade was a calculated risk that just didn’t pay off. It still took Wheeler a LONG time to finally arrive, so even with 20/20 hindsight, I have a hard time criticizing the trade. Picking up a 12-year 1B starter in the 5th round was an absolute coup.
