Flying Squirrels committed six (6) errors tonight. Dylan Davis had four (4) of them (3 throws and 1 fielding from 3b), and Miguel Gomez had two more (he has six on the season)

Dylan Davis' 2nd career game at 3B, and Gomez's 23rd career game at 2B.

Neither gentlemen are known for their defense, but that's what the minors are for. Ali Castillo, arguably one of the best infield defenders in our minor league system, DH'd for the Squirrels tonight.

Sacramento River Cats AAA off-day (7-12)

Richmond Flying Squirrels AA lost 13-2 (7-11). Had 6 errors, gave up 21 hits

The Squirrels had more errors than hits, Dylan Davis (4) and Miguel Gomez (2) committing all 6.

Hunter Cole 1-1, 2B, 3 BB

Andrew Suarez 3.2-8-5-2-1-3. Had 82 pitches, faced 20 batters. His defense was utter garbage behind him, committing 3 errors while he was out there. Though he did throw 2 wild pitches himself.

San Jose Giants A+ lost 3-2 (9-11)

Ryan Howard 2-4, K. Played SS

Jake McCasland 5.0-5-2-2-2-5
Connor Kaden 3.0-2-1-1-3-1

He's an exciting prospect, and hopefully this is a sign that he's found his swing. We saw the defense yesterday, now the big bat today.

Looking over those team records, there is some definite consistency to them. The whole organization is not looking good on winning percentage.

Thursday 4/27

Pitching Line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats AAA lost 4-0 (7-13). Game only went 5 innings due to :rain:

Ryder Jones and Austin Slater each had a single. They were the only baserunners for the Cats. Tacoma only had 2 hits as well, but 6 walks.

Rickey Romero 1.2-1-4-4-5-1
Matt Reynolds 2.1-0-0-0-1-3
Ryan Webb 1.0-1-0-0-0-1

Richmond Flying Squirrels AA enjoyed the day off (7-11)

San Jose Giants A+ won 5-2 (10-11)

Matt Winn 2-4, HR (1), 1 RBI, 2 R
Jonah Arenado 2-4, 2B, 2 RBI, 1 R

Conner Menez 6.0-4-2-2-3-10 (2.78 ERA)
David Owen 1.0-1-0-0-1-1 (2.81 ERA)
Dusten Knight 1.0-0-0-0-1-2 (1.26 ERA)
Ryan Halstead 1.0-0-0-0-0-2 (0.79 ERA)

Pretty damn good performance from the San Jose pitching staff.

Menez is an interesting prospect. 2016 14th rounder. He's not going to wow anybody with his pitches (FB with arm-side movement at 88-91, and glove side movement at 90-93, slider low 80s that's usually a plus pitch, and a change up than he really needs to work on), but he's a lefty with funk and that is always valuable. He throws from a low 3/4 release, which is really hard to pick up on (Bumgarner throws from a low 3/4). Looks like at worst he could be a LOOGY one day.

Dusten Knight has a 19-1 K-BB ratio in 14.1 innings this year. He's a San Jose repeat, but he has a career 10.7 K/9 in 237.2 innings (and 130 games with only 1 start), which is notable. He's old (26, will turn 27 in September), but has shown impressive stuff. in the past. Probably won't amount to much tbh.

Halstead was a 2015 draftee, a closer at Indiana. Fastball runs up to 95 and gets a lot of swing and misses, and a slider 80-82, but mostly fastballs. So far in his career he has a 103-13 K-BB ratio, in 92.1 IP.

Augusta GreenJackets A lost 8-5 (9-12)

Ashford Fulmer 2-3, 2B, BB, 1 RBI, 2 R, SB (2)
Frandy De La Rosa 1-3, 2 BB, 2 SB (2), CS (3). Been mostly played 1B

Matt Solter 5.1-4-3-3-4-4 (3.48 ERA)

Looks like Augusta needs a 2nd (or 3rd!) athletic trainer. They have 12 players listed on their roster who are on the disabled list!

Pretty exciting night for the Giants all around. I'll do the write up later, but here are some tidbits:

Dillon Dobson, a day after being activated from the DL, hit 3 homers tonight. One to LF, CF, and RF.

Melvin Adon and Sam Coonrod had great starts.

Slade Heathcott robbed a homerun tonight.

Friday 4/28

Pitching line: IP-H-R-ER-BB-K

Sacramento River Cats AAA lost 2-1 (7-14)

Jae-Gyun Hwang 2-4. Played 1B
Mac Willliamson 0-4, 2 Ks. Played LF.

Michael Roth 5.0-6-2-2-2-0. Yawn
Bryan Morris 1.0-1-0-0-1-1
Roberto Gomez 1.0-0-0-0-0-1
Josh Osich 1.0-0-0-0-0-1. 11 pitches, 8 strikes. Good.

Former Giant and smelly fart guy Jean Machi got the save.

Richmond Flying Squirrels AA lost 2-1 (7-12)

Dylan Davis 2-3, 1 R, 1 BB. Played LF (notably, not 3B)
Hunter Cole 2-4, 2 2B, 1 RBI

Here is Slade Heathcott robbing a homer (god these minor league announcers are terrible): Video Highlights & Clips - MiLB | Richmond's Heathcott robs a home run - Video | MiLB.com Multimedia | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Sam Coonrod 6.0-4-2-2-1-7
Christian Jones 1.0-0-0-0-0-1
Reyes Moronta 1.0-0-0-0-0-2

Coonrod get's the tough luck loss. He's been really great so far. 25-2 K-BB ratio in 20 innings, only 15 hits allowed. Don't be surprised if we see Reyes Moronta at some point this year with the Giants.

San Jose Giants A+ won 11-4 (11-11)

Dillon Dobson 4-4, 3 HR (4), 5 RBI, 4 R. Hit one to LF, RF, and CF. Have a night
Gio Brusa 1-3, HR (4), 3 RBI, 3 R, 1 BB, 1 K. Went back-to-back with Dobson.
Ryan Howard 2-4, 1 RBI, 2 R

Dobson isn't a super prospect by any means, but he's a guy to pay attention to, even before this game. Remember Nick Noonan? Dobson is of that same mold. He's a utility guy, played 1st and 3rd last year, this year he's playing 2nd. His path to the majors will be in that role.

Here's Joe Ritzo (one of the few good minor league announcers) on Dobson's 3rd homer: Video Highlights & Clips - MiLB | San Jose's Dobson nets hat trick - Video | MiLB.com Multimedia | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

Mike Connolly 7.0-6-2-2-0-5

Pretty dominant start for Mike. He's org depth though.

Augusta GreenJackets A won 3-2 in 10 innings (10-12)

Sandro Fabian 2-4
Kevin Rivera 2-4, 2 RBI, 1 R. Hit a walk-off single in the 10th

Melvin Adon 6.0-2-1-1-0-6. Utter domination for Adon. Don't have any velocity numbers for you, but I can guess it was good. He has a 20-7 K-BB ratio in 17.2 innings.

Beede was absolutely dominant in this start. He had command of everything, and induced 12 ground balls. I'm not too concerned about the future of the rotation if the Giants trade Cueto this year. Save some money to invest in the offense. Bum-Moore-Shark-Blach-Beede

The Richmond bullpen is dominant, tons of potential MLers there, Moronta, Alvarado, Snelten, Cyr, Rodolfo Martinez (when he's healthy).

Nice start for Cory Taylor, the ERA isn't pretty, but this is 2 consecutive great starts. He has a nasty two-seamer at 87-90, tons of movement on that pitch. He also has a slider. He's had good strikeout numbers in the minors so far, but I think that's more of a product of bad hitting than true strikeout stuff. He's more of a groundball pitcher. 2015 8th round draft pick, he made the big jump from Augusta last year to Richmond this year, spending only a little bit of time in San Jose (3 starts and maybe a playoff appearance). Needs to have better command with his fastball and develop a change up, but keep an eye on him.

Not much good to say about Krook, might need to take a step back for a bit.

If he can hit, maybe play LF? Oh, he'd probably miss the cutoff man and toss it into McCovey Cove.

Ryder Jones played LF...

He was playing some LF in the Spring, and now has 2 games there in the regular season. Reports say he hasn't looked very good yet, but it's early.

It certainly helps his chances as a utility guy, he has extensive experience at 3B, 1B and hopefully LF will work out for him, he has a cannon. He's always had nice power potential, though has yet to show it consistently. He's also still very young (turns 23 in June). Could be a nice replacement for Gillaspie down the road.

He'll have to be added to the 40-man roster this offseason, unless they feel like exposing him to the rule 5 or he's called up before then.

I don't think there is much chance he will not be added. He is no blue-chipper, but he is certainly an asset.

Agreed. He's close enough to the majors too. It's not like he'd be going from A-ball to the majors (though that didn't stop the Padres this year).
