Source: Red Sox reach deal with J.D. Martinez

The Boston Red Sox have agreed to a deal with J.D. Martinez, ending their stalemate with the free-agent slugger, a source told ESPN's Pedro Gomez.

Martinez agreed to a five-year contract and can opt out of the deal after two seasons. According to FanRag Sports, the deal is worth $110 million, with $50 million to be paid over the first two seasons.

The Red Sox, seeking to upgrade the middle of their lineup after finishing last in the American League in home runs in 2017, emerged as a potential suitor for Martinez earlier this offseason and reportedly offered him a five-year deal worth approximately $100 million last month.

Had to happen. The D-backs should have gone an extra year.

I was saying to my buddy, he needs to go the Yoenis route and get an opt out. Shocked it's not after one year though. You'd think he would want to capitalize on whoever misses on Harper. If teams are saving up and clearing salary for Harper someone is walking away empty handed.

I think that the team would hate to give the out after one year and probably insisted on two.

As far as the spending sprees next year go. They will be limited to guys like Harper and Machado
Truly special players. Martinez is great, but I don't think he fits that mold.

Don't think an extra year would have mattered, he wanted the years...

Good. As much as I loved what JD did for the Dbacks in 2017, paying him $20+ mil for more than two years, was never in the books for them.

With the humidor now in place, Jarrod Dyson is the much better signing for them.

That's a good spot for him. They had a good lineup last year but they just didn't have any power

Wait...what?

You said the Dbacks should have offered another year... They only offered 1 year to him, correct? So 2 years wouldn't have helped... He wanted more years, which he got

Depending on if he gets hurt or not. It's a much bigger win for him.

He gets to bail for more money after 2 years if he's healthy. If he's hurt or ineffective, Boston is still on the hook to pay him for 3 more years.

since he'll mostly be a DH, he should be fine

He won't be ineffective. It's only 270 for a HR both both lines

Fenway is about the worst place for Martinez game imo.

I expect his SLG to regress. Not to where he was as an Astro. But nowhere near what he did last season. And prolly significantly lower than his Detroit numbers.

His singles to left will go up. (10/12 hits in his career at Fenway are singles.)

Wish him well though. He's put in a tremendous amount of work to get where his is as a hitter.
