For the most part, I agree with 64 teams. Although, VCU had their run and made the FF as a play-in team in 2011.
Absolutely right. In the one bid conferences the regular season is basically meaningless. The regular season champ theoretically could be 27-0 (with an RPI of 113 or something) and lose in the conference tourney and the last place team could be 0-27 and fluke their way in with 3-4 straight wins over a weekend. It's highly flawed, but what are you gonna do?Autobids for Conference tournaments don't give you more basketball. It actually decreases the number of meaningful games you could be watching during the regular season. You're right though, they don't affect seedings it just devalues the regular season. If you were coaching a mid-major your goal would not need to win the regular season. It would be to build depth, gain experience, and make it through the regular season without injuries and playing good basketball so that you could win the tournament. It's like an entire preseason
