The last two Super Bowl winners play pinball machine offense......looks like a pretty good chance of that trend continuing this year....

NO and GB had pretty Good D's last year and the year prior

The last team to win a superbowl with an avergae QB was the Ravens and Dilfer.

You always need a good QB. Rodgers, Brees, Brady, Ben....There havent been 4 QBs playing at the same time this good since Aikman, Young, Elway and Kelly.

If New England plays Green Bay in the Super Bowl it would be the 31st and 32nd ranked defenses in the league.

Which is why I'm picking New Orleans to win it all....best defense amongst the pinball offenses......

Gmen would have to pull off two huge upsets on the road, assuming the Saints hold next week.....

Speaking of defense optional, is anyone watching the Rose Bowl? Looks like Ore/Wis have an honest shot at 100+ combined.....

Missed it, but I heard it was wild.....this explains why LSU/Ala are playing for the title, though.....nobody else plays any defense at all......

This games insane. Back and forth, these offenses are firing the ball around and neither defense can seem to get a stop. Hell of a game.

As for the defenses, the modern day defense doesn't need to be a great defense. They just need to get turnovers. Some of the great defenses in the league give up a ton of yards, but as long as you get turnovers and hold them from scoring, you'll be fine.

The year the Saints won the Superbowl, they were 25th in yards given up, 20th in points given up. Did I mention they were 2nd in the league in takeaways?

Last year, the Packers were 5th in yards given up, 2nd in points given up. Solid defense. Takeaways? 4th.

Thus far this year, the Packers are WORST IN THE LEAGUE in yards given up. Dead last. However, they're 19th in points given up. I know that's still not very good, but for being 32nd in yards given up, that's outstanding. Takeaways? They're 2nd, only behind San Fran. They're a great defense because they cause turnovers. Yards given up doesn't mean a whole lot anymore. Granted their defense isn't top notch this year, but it's shown up in games. (throw out that last game)

Defense anymore in the NFL is about turnovers. Offense is about airing it out. Even the Steelers and Ravens are realizing it. The Steelers have been a passing team for years, their fans even agree. Sure, it doesn't hurt to have a solid rushing attack. But you gotta be able to put up points.

sometimes you give up more on defense by scoring faster.

But, you do whatever you need to do to win.
