yeah i havnt read the article but i touched on it in the "spring ball" thread. To be honest i think there is @ least a small chance that he is our punter this year. During warm ups he was booming them during the open scrimmages while _____(not sure who they were using during the "games") was averaging somewhere between 25-35 yards and had one that went about 8.

We have enjoyed superb punting for the last several years, but unless something major happens over the summer we may struggle some there next year.

KT tweets after tonights mini scrimmage:

#Hokies head coach Frank Beamer said that if the other punters remain inconsistent, he's leaning toward senior WR Danny Coale as starter.

Beamer said he likes Coale's game experience, albeit at receiver. Said Coale showed enough this spring that he can become a strong punter

Coale, by the way, had punts of 37 and 42 yards in the mini-scrimmage

well, whatever works. just hope he doesnt pull a leg muscle kicking it!

in 4th and short situations Coale might be good to have back there if we were to go for a fake (not usually our style), but at least we know he's used to taking some hits and wont crumple like some kickers/punters do

Sounds more and more like DC will be our punter! From the latest KT:

“Punter, I don’t know. Right now, I really don’t know. We talked today. If we stay inconsistent, I’m probably going to go with Danny Coale because he’s the guy you trust and the guy that’s (been) in the game. But we’re going to have to get his steps a little quicker. He gets a third step in there, and we need to get him down to a two-step kicker. Distance and height are good. His fundamentals are a little ragged, but he’s got all summer to work on it. I’m hoping one of these (other) guys will step up. (Ethan) Keyserling hit a couple before practice and boomed them. (Scott) Demler has his moments. (Grant) Bowden has his moments. (Conor) Goulding has his moments. But just a guy who can do it over and over, we haven’t found that this spring.”

ON BEING SURPRISED THAT COALE COULD REALLY WIN THE JOB: “If I don’t have some better consistency, we’re going to go with Danny – if Danny can get his steps down. But he can’t work on that now. He’s got all summer to work on it. I could see him – he’s very athletic, got good hands back there, been in big games so he’s a guy you trust – we’re going to look at him. I could see Danny working on it a lot between now and next fall and being very good.”

senior wide receiver Danny Coale, who is going to finish in the top five in school history in just about every receiving category, not only caught three passes for 40 yards and a touchdown tonight ... but he also ran once for an 8-yard touchdown and ... punted twice for an average of 39.5 yards per attempt.

Yeah, the defense never accounts for the white guy. Beamerball baby, Beamerball.

Best i can remember DC had a nice 50ish yarder today and another that went about 40 that was nearly blocked <---- i can honestly see where game experience played a factor here because he never flinched or froze, just focused and got the ball outa there.) he may have had another one or two i left halfway through the 4th.

IMO: The way things are starting to line up it wouldnt surprise me if DC is our punter this fall. FWIW one of the other punters (cant keep up with their names, so i know this isnt much of a point) hit a nice high spiral that went 45+, but in total this spring i've seen 3 punts that went less than 12 yards.:frown:

Also imo if we had to play a game next saturday CJ would be our FG/pat kicker and meyer our KO specialist.
