Giants have claimed Engelb Vielma from the Twins. He looks to be a light-hitting infield utility player with moderate speed. No announcement about the subsequent 40-move, but it shouldn't be an issue since there are so many guys out for the season with injury.

No idea about his options status. Seeing as he is 22, I will guess he still has at least 1 past this season...

Just what the Giants need. :L

The Twins purchased his contract last November, so it looks like he's only had one option year used:

Juuuuuuust what this team needs, another middle infielder! This front office is really on top of things. I guess MLB is changing the rules so that there are no OF's anymore. :noidea:

We will need re-evaluate the current roster in regards to coming off season moves. That initial analysis was done when Nunez was still around and Sandoval had not come back yet...

He's a plus defender (one of the better ones at SS depending on who you ask) with not very much bat. Profile matches similarly to.... Ehire Adrianza of all people.

Funny how things work. Twins have a number of shortstops in the pipeline and Adrianza's emergence probably made them more okay with losing Vielma to waivers.

Any word on if he will be joining SF? I added him to the active roster, but I have no reason to think that.

I hadn't even realized that EA was getting regular time this year.

His .273 BA would make him an all star on this years Giants...

Morse finally added to 60-day DL to clear that roster spot
Never mind that we could use a couple more bullpen arms. Carlos Moncrief, in my opinion, is more worthy of a 40 man roster spot than Vielma. Why waste a 40 man spot a middle infielder who won't hit .250 at the big league level when the team has a bunch of decisions to make on their minor league arms this year.

Evidently only geniuses understand what this is all about. The rest of us non-MENSA types are just lost here.

Giants claimed Pierce Johnson off of waivers from the Cubs today. To clear space, they transferred Brandon Belt to the 60-day DL.

Johnson was once a huge prospect, ranking among the top in the Cubs system 4-5 years ago and in the top 100. Posted great numbers from 2012-2015 until he reached AAA in 2016, where he fell off the map a bit. Still, he has a good fastball that tails/sinks at 91-93 and a curveball. Threw a changeup when he was starting, but stopped throwing it when he moved to relief full-time.

I wonder what the Giants will do with him. There's some optimism out there that he can still be a solid #3/#4 starter. If the Giants can iron out whatever is wrong, there's a lot of talent there. Real solid pick up.

Johnson has 1 option year remaining.

Chase, Jordan and Stephen welcome you. Maybe all 4 of the Johnsons can pitch together in Sacramento next year.

Distinct possibility, if Chase gets healthy. Now the Giants just need to sign Chris Johnson to play 3rd base for them.

I think there was a Chris Johnson was a pitcher for the org a couple of years ago. Bring him back and round out the RiverCats' rotation.

Just saw this, first on ESPN (regarding Moncrief) and then on the Giants' transaction page:

9/20/17 San Francisco Giants claimed RHP Pierce Johnson off waivers from Chicago Cubs.
9/22/17 San Francisco Giants activated RHP Pierce Johnson.
9/25/17 San Francisco Giants selected the contract of Carlos Moncrief from Sacramento River Cats.

There is no corresponding move listed to make room for Moncrief. The team's 40 man roster page lists 41 players (not counting Morse, Belt or Smith). And apparently, Pierce Johnson is with the team.

Weird. The transaction on Moncrief has disappeared on the Giants' team page and he is no longer listed on the 40 man roster. However, you go to the ESPN baseball transaction page and it still shows there:

Selected the contract of OF Carlos Moncrief from Sacramento (PCL).

I don't see anything on this on MLB Trade Rumors. I wonder if the MLB office accidentally reported his call up from last month again and rescinded it but ESPN hasn't updated yet.

Thought I would update this with Cain’s departure...

Top 10 players with organizational seniority...

1) Madison Bumgarner (1st round 2007)
2) Buster Posey (1st round 2008)
3) Brandon Crawford (4th round 2008)
4) Brandon Belt (5th round 2009)
5) Ryan Lollis (37th round 2009)
6) Jarrett Parker (2nd round 2010)
7) Jeff Arnold (26th round 2010)
8) Jake McCasland (38th round 2010)
9) Joe Panik (1st round 2011)
10) Kyle Crick (1st round-sup 2011)

I expect quite a few of these guys to exit the org this off-season, so it should continue to change quite a bit in the coming months.

I would guess that Lollis, Arnold and McCasland are almost certain to be gone. Parker, Belt and Panik are all possible departures. Bum, Posey, Craw and Crick are almost certain to return.

McCasland doesn't belong on this list. While the Giants did draft him in 2010, he did not sign. They drafted him again 2013 and signed him that year. Instead, Josh Osich should be the 10th player on your list, and I think he could very well be gone from the organization in the next few months as well.
Both Arnold and Lollis could return. They were both re-signed by the org last year, after their 1st year as free agents, and the org does like keeping a few of their own in the farm.
I think that Kyle Crick could be added to the Parker, Belt and Panik list as possible departures. I say that because, if there is one area of strength on the team, its probably the bullpen and if the Giants want to land someone big, they might through in Crick to entice the other team.
