Gearrin locked up for 1.05M. His estimated Arb value was 1.1M, so the Giants get a very slight discount.

EA also signed a weird Major/Minir league contract. He gets 600K in the majors, 300K in the minors. Seeing as he doesn't have any options left, I have no clue haw this one works.

There are rumors that Kontos was inked as well, but no confirmation...

I'm pretty sure it simply means he'll make $600K if he's on a 40-man roster, and if he's DFA'd and clears waivers, he'll make $300K playing in the minors. It acts as an insurance policy of sorts. He'll make $300K playing for the Giants minors (way more than most other AAA players), or forgo that if he plays elsewhere.

The non-tender deadline was on Dec 2, and no Giants were announced as non-tendered, so I moved the 4 arb-eligible players for the Giants to the 40-man roster.

Gillaspie
Nunez
Smith
Kontos

Gillaspie signs a 1-year deal, avoiding arbitration.
Casilla signs with Oakland.

Ehrie Adrianza DFA'd to clear room for Nick Hundley.

Remember, he signed a split deal. He's making significantly more than the average AAA player if he stays with the Giants (assuming he isn't traded or picked up). He was a goner almost any way you sliced it, even before the Hwang signing.

Not surprising. I do wonder if he stays because of the deal or tries his hand elsewhere since spring training hasn't even started yet. Remember, this is the 2nd time (at least) he's been dfa'd by the Giants.

Hard year for any reliever to latch on to a team. When you have a down year, are getting up there in age and are testing the market for interest, this year definitely says "retire".
The game as a whole has become very Have/Have-not. No more middle class.

To be fair, he is 39 years old and looked very mediocre in 2016.
My coment was more general. Petit is an example of the elimination of the MLB middle class.

Got it. But for every Petit, there's a Mike Dunn landing a multi year deal. Weird to me he gets a deal like he did while Boone Logan has to wait until February to get a 1 year deal.
