The more I look at it the less I understand it. They had two other outfielders that I guess you could say are a little better in Sousa and Kiermeier. But they also got Denard Span in the Longoria trade and are apparently paying 9 million of his salary. But still, unless they can get out of paying him the 6 mil. I can't believe that you wouldn't rather have Dickerson on the roster as a DH/OF than say, Mallex Smith.

they took Span's money up front in one year to move the last 4 or 5 years of Longo's deal.

ok, so I guess they figured they already paid for Span so they can save most of the 6 million that was going to Dickerson and hope that Span is about as good as he would have been.

It will be interesting to see what Dickerson gets as a free agent. It seems like the Rays kind of screwed him.

Span as a corner OF might have some surpring value as he could still be (in theory) a plus defensive OF.

He's probably a better option than Mallex Smtih at this point, although you could argue getting him the experience might be better.

Smith is antoher guy who's D could really rise up playing a corner. The fact that he graded out really well in RF, but was essentially neutral in both LF and CF is interesting.

My guess is Span gets more time there this year and Smith gets the job next year.

FWIW, Steamer projects Dickerson to hit .258/.308/.460 (102 wRC+). Steamer has Cron hitting .253/.308/.447 (101 wRC+). ZiPS has more of a gap between the two (113 wRC+ for Dickerson and 103 wRC+ for Cron), but even then Dickerson only projects to about 1.8 WAR. Both projections don't see him sustaining his .338 BABIP from last year.

Why not? His career BABIP is .329. His 2017 clip is right along his demonstrated ability.

that might be skewed by Coors though... he has a career .394 BABIP there. It's .296 at Tampa,. Not sure ~500 PA split between multiple seasons is a good sample size though, but that's my guess why those projections don't see him sustaining a high BABIP.

I guess now that they made that Souza trade it is pretty clear that this is a "punt" year. It could turn out ok down the road if Nick Solak pans out.

^ That is actually not a bad deal for the Pirates. Got rid of Hudson and his salary and an OF that didn't include a AAAA hitter to pan out.

Holy schnitzel, the Pirates made an excellent move this off-season. Not only did they fill a hole for this season with a guy who they have under contract for next season when they should be back in contention, but they dumped Hudson on someone.

I was worried the Pirates were just going with the quantity over quality approach to the 4th outfield spot the way they have with some positions over the years. Glad they did this. Feels like more like a move Huntington would've made in 2013-15 instead of some of these recently.

I love to follow the snail tracks on these things and not knowing how conversations go, it seems like this DFA thing was procedural just ahead of the trade. I don't understand how that works but I am also kind of too cynical to think that they DFA the guy and a couple of days later, presto! They have a trade. I'd bet this trade was agreed to a lot earlier than this. Not sure, however, why they went through the DFA process unless there is some kind of contractual connection to it. If they knew they were gonna trade CD to the Pirates, why not just do that?

It forces a team on the fence about trading for him to make it or lose him to waivers:suds:

They could have made the trade without DFA'ing the guy, is all I am saying. Watching all the dominoes, they knew long before this that they were gonna make the trade with the Yanks. They just don't get up, have coffee and make a trade. Those deals are a much longer process than you and me sitting down over beers and trading baseball cards. I see what happened, just would like to be part of the process as it starts. I don't think it's like they show it in Moneyball.
