Yeah, that's a weird one. I'm very aware of him because last year I kept choosing him on my draftKings team and he was great.

I'd gladly DFA Markakis to make room for the Mississippi kid.

I know his first half was amazing last year and his second half not...but still surprised. Wouldn't mind the Braves picking him up and getting rid of Markakis somehow.

I doubt he will make it an NL team for a claim. He would need to clear all 15 AL teams before the Giants got a crack at him.

But the Rays could still trade him regardless.

I’d gappily take him in Boston.

He’s a better fit in Boston than Hosmer.

And he’d be cheaper than LoMo.

And he could keep Hanley’s option from vesting.

it's possible the Rays put a lot of stock into Dickerson's 2nd half struggles.

This...

I am very shocked Dickerson was DFA.. I mean it's not like he sucked, and has anyone heard stories of him being a clubhouse cancer or anything like that?

Yeah I agree. You would think they could get something for him from another team, even cash. Supposedly they still have 10 days left to trade him so maybe they have something worked out?
They also traded Jake Odorizzi for a 20 year old single A shortstop prospect.

Seems to me a lot of unloading of contracts in favor of cheaper players.
Somebody is going to have a lot of talent floating around in a year or so.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding how mlb contracts work but I thought they were all guaranteed. The Rays just gave Dickerson almost 6 million this year to avoid arbitration. So if he goes to another team they still have to pay most of that, right? (and if he doesn't get any offers I think they have to pay all of it).

I believe that Tampa only owes Dickerson 30 days termination pay, so about a million bucks or so.

Ah, so I guess the contracts are not completely guaranteed until they reach that initial 6 years in the majors or whatever. I guess it was a money thing after all.

I confess to not being Mr. Contract on this but it occurs to me that the Rays are interested in dealing Dickerson. There is literally zero reason, money or otherwise, to let a .290 hitter just walk. I can't see how this works but ... christ in a shoebox ... there are 50 outfielders already on rosters who can't hit. 240. This one has to stink just a little.

I'm sure that they were already shopping him around the league before they DFAed him, and yet here we are.

The more I look at it the less I understand it. They had two other outfielders that I guess you could say are a little better in Sousa and Kiermeier. But they also got Denard Span in the Longoria trade and are apparently paying 9 million of his salary. But still, unless they can get out of paying him the 6 mil. I can't believe that you wouldn't rather have Dickerson on the roster as a DH/OF than say, Mallex Smith.

It's for guys who are in arb. Teams can can rid of them before a certain date and only own them one month's pay.

it's been used before, but probably not for a guy who was an All-Star the year before.
