John Lynch told Kap if he didn't opt out the 49ers were going to release him anyway. He was not going to be a 49er next season. What would be the point of that? He had no leverage. The salary cap implications were minimal compared to what he would have been owed. By opting out, he was able to hit the free agency market a month earlier which should have helped him find another team were he not bogged down by his other issues.
